Consequences of Pollution

The following are consequences of pollution:

  3. Soil pollution reducing soil fertility and productivity.
  4. Loss of biodiversity due to habitat destruction.
  5. Increased incidence of diseases in humans and animals.

Water Borne Diseases

Pollution of water bodies leads to water borne diseases which affect human health and can be fatal if untreated.

These include:

  1. Cholera
  2. Typhoid
  3. Dysentery
  4. Diarrhea
  5. Hepatitis A

Destruction of Soil Organisms and Soil Fertility

Pollutants such as chemical wastes, pesticides, and industrial effluents destroy beneficial soil organisms that support plant growth and reduce soil fertility.

The following are effects of pollution on soil:

  1. Reduction in organic matter content.
  2. Death of earthworms and other decomposers.
  3. Poor crop yield due to nutrient depletion.
  4. Increased soil erosion.

Control Measures Against Pollution

To reduce the harmful effects of pollution, preventive and control measures are essential at individual and community levels.

Examples are:

  1. Proper disposal of solid and liquid wastes.
  2. Treatment of industrial effluents before discharge.
