Lesson Content

Input Devices – Keyboard and Mouse

Input devices help us give instructions to a computer. They let us tell the computer what to do. Common input devices include keyboards, mice, touchscreens, microphones, and webcams.

Keyboard

A keyboard lets us type words and numbers into the computer. It has many keys, some for special actions.

Parts of a Keyboard

The keyboard is made up of different parts that perform specific functions. These include:

  1. Keys: For typing letters, numbers, and symbols.
  2. Function Keys: For special actions like printing or saving.
  3. Arrow Keys: To move the cursor.
  4. Space bar: To add spaces between words.
  5. Enter Key: To confirm actions or go to the next line.
  6. Shift key: To type capital letters or special characters.
  7. Control Key: Used with other keys for special functions.
  8. Caps Lock Key: To type in all capital letters continuously.
  9. Number Pad: for easy input of numbers, especially in calculations.

Mouse

A mouse moves a small arrow (the cursor) on the screen. We click to open things.

Parts of a Mouse

The mouse is made up of different parts that perform specific functions. These include:

  1. Buttons: The left button selects, the right button opens menus.
  2. Scroll Wheel: To move up and down pages.
  3. Cursor: The arrow on the screen controlled by the mouse.
  4. Optical Sensor: Detects movement on the surface.
  5. Cable or Wireless Receiver: Connects the mouse to the computer.
