Components of a System Unit – Disk Drive
A disk drive is a vital computer part that saves and gets digital information. It’s like a computer library, holding files, programs, and the operating system.
What is a disk Drive?
A disk drive is a storage device that reads and writes data on a storage medium.
Imagine a spinning disk, like a record, with a special coating holding information.This disk is divided into tiny sections (sectors) in circles (tracks). A tiny arm with a read/write head moves across the disk, reading or writing data. This is how a hard disk drive (HDD) works.
Types of Disk Drives
Disk drives come in various forms, each with its own method of storing and retrieving data.
The following are types of disk drives:
- Hard Disk Drive (HDD)
- Solid State Drive (SSD)
Hard Disk Drive (HDD)
HDDs are traditional disk drives using spinning platters to store data. They are cheaper but slower and more easily damaged than SSDs because of their moving parts.
Solid State Drive (SSD)
SSDs are newer and use flash memory, like memory cards. They have no moving parts, making them faster and more reliable than HDDs, but they are more expensive.
