Lesson Content

Simple Machines – Scissors

Scissors are a simple machine we use daily. They are a type of lever that helps us cut things.

What is a Scissors?

A pair of scissors is a cutting tool with two blades joined at a pivot in the middle.

Uses of Scissors:

Scissors have many uses. These include:

  1. Cutting paper for art or shapes.
  2. Cutting fabric for sewing.
  3. Opening packages.
  4. Cutting materials like cardboard, foam, felt,or plastic for decorations.
  5. Trimming hair or threads.
  6. cutting food items in the kitchen.

Parts and Uses of Scissors

Scissors are a simple cutting tool with two blades joined at a pivot and handles for the fingers. At school, suitable blunt-ended scissors can cut paper, thread or light card during craft activities.

Carry scissors with the closed blades pointing downward. Pass them handle-first, cut away from the body, remain seated while cutting, and use them only with the teacher’s permission. Scissors are not toys.

Guided Practice

The teacher demonstrates the safe grip. Pupils then cut along a thick straight line on paper while the teacher supervises.

Teaching Methods

To deliver this lesson,‌ ⁤the teacher will⁤ adopt⁤ the following methods: Presentation, Discussion, Question and Answer.

Instructional Procedures

To deliver this lesson, the teacher will adopt the following steps:

Step 1: Introduction (Set Induction)

Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Questioning, Discussion
Teacher’s Activity: Show a pair of scissors and ask pupils what it is indeed and what it is used for.
Pupils’ activity: Respond to the teacher’s questions and participate in the discussion.

Step 2: Clarification of Key Concepts

Time: 10 minutes
Teaching Skill: Explanation, Demonstration
Teacher’s Activity: Explain what a scissor is and how it works. Demonstrate how to use scissors safely.
Pupils’ Activity: listen attentively and observe the demonstration.

Step 3: Demonstration/Guided Practice

Time: 10 minutes
Teaching Skill: Guided Practice
Teacher’s Activity: Guide pupils in using scissors to cut paper under close supervision.
Pupils’ Activity: Practice cutting paper with guidance from the teacher.

Step 4: Self-reliant Practice

Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Monitoring
Teacher’s Activity: Supervise pupils as they independently cut paper.Pupils’ Activity: Cut paper independently, practicing safe scissor use.

Step 5: Note-Taking

Time: 5 minutes
teaching Skill: Note-Taking
Teacher’s Activity: Guide pupils in writing down key points about scissors.
pupils’ Activity: Write down key points in thier notebooks.

Step 6: Evaluation/Review

Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Questioning
Teacher’s Activity: Ask evaluation questions to assess understanding.
pupils’ Activity: answer the evaluation questions.

Objective-aligned checks:

  1. Identify a pair of scissors.
  2. List at least two uses of scissors.
  3. explain that scissors are a type of simple machine.

Step 7: Conclusion

Time: 2 minutes
Teaching Skill: Summarizing
Teacher’s Activity: Summarize the key points about scissors and their uses, emphasizing the importance of safe scissor handling. Praise pupils for their participation and learning.
Pupils’ Activity: Listen attentively and ask questions for clarification.

Lesson Keywords

  • Scissors – A cutting tool with two blades joined at a pivot.
  • Simple Machine – A tool that makes work easier.
  • lever – A type of simple machine that uses a pivot point.
  • Cutting – Separating or dividing somthing with a sharp tool.
  • Blades – The sharp parts of scissors used for cutting.

Lesson Evaluation

To evaluate the learning, the teacher asks pupils to:

  1. What is a pair of scissors?

  1. Draw a picture of a pair of scissors.
  2. List three places where you can find scissors.
  3. Ask your parents to show you how they use scissors at home.

Differentiation

  • For slower learners: Provide one-on-one assistance with using scissors and simplify the tasks.
  • For advanced learners: Challenge them to find other examples of simple machines and explain how they work.
  • For visual/auditory/kinesthetic learners: Use visual aids, verbal explanations, and hands-on activities to cater to different learning styles.

Note for Teachers

Ensure that pupils are closely supervised when using scissors to prevent accidents. Emphasize the importance of following safety guidelines. Provide additional support to pupils who need it.
