ENGINE – Identification of Main Components

1. Cylinder Block

The cylinder block is the main structural component of an engine, often made of cast iron or aluminum. It houses the cylinders and provides support for other engine parts.

The functions of the cylinder block include:

  • Providing a rigid frame for the engine.
  • Housing the cylinders where combustion occurs.
  • Containing passages for coolant and lubricating oil.
  • Supporting the crankshaft and camshaft.

2. Piston

A piston is a cylindrical component that moves up and down within the engine cylinder. It converts the pressure from burning fuel into mechanical force.

The main functions of the piston are:

  • Transmitting power from the expanding gases to the crankshaft via the connecting rod.
  • Sealing the combustion chamber to prevent gas leakage.

3. Crankshaft

The crankshaft is a large rotating shaft that converts the reciprocating (up and down) motion of the pistons into rotary motion, which drives the vehicle’s wheels.

Key features of a crankshaft include:

  • Having crankpins to which the connecting rods are attached.
  • Being balanced to ensure smooth engine operation.

4. Camshaft

The camshaft is a rotating shaft with lobes (cams) that open and close the engine’s intake and exhaust valves at precise times during the engine cycle.

The primary role of the camshaft is:

  • Controlling the timing and lift of the engine valves.

5. Valves

Valves are components that open and close ports in the cylinder head, controlling the flow of air-fuel mixture into the cylinders and exhaust gases out of the cylinders.

The two main types of valves are:

  • Intake Valve: Allows the air-fuel mixture (or air only in diesel engines) to enter the cylinder.
  • Exhaust Valve: Allows burnt gases to exit the cylinder after combustion.

6. Engine Head (Cylinder Head)

The engine head, or cylinder head, is bolted on top of the cylinder block. It forms the upper part of the combustion chamber and houses the valves, spark plugs (in petrol engines), and sometimes the camshaft.

Functions of the engine head include:

  • Sealing the top of the cylinders to create the combustion chamber.
  • Providing passages for intake and exhaust gases.
  • Housing the valvetrain components.
