Causes Of Ethnicity In Nigeria

Ethnicity happens when people believe that their tribe is better than others. This lesson teaches the reasons why people think like this and why it causes problems.

The following are the causes of ethnicity in Nigeria:

Poverty: Many people fight for their tribe because they are poor and want benefits. Poverty can lead to increased competition for limited resources, such as jobs, land, and political power, which can exacerbate ethnic tensions.This competition can lead to discrimination and marginalization of certain ethnic groups, further fueling ethnic divisions.
Illiteracy: People who do not go to school may not understand the need for unity. Illiteracy can limit people’s understanding of different cultures and perspectives, leading to prejudice and stereotypes. It can also make people more susceptible to manipulation by political leaders who exploit ethnic divisions for their own gain.
Bad Leadership: When leaders onyl help their own tribe, it causes division. Nepotism, corruption, and favoritism towards one’s own ethnic group can create resentment and distrust among other groups. This can lead to political instability and even violence.
Colonialism: The way the British ruled Nigeria caused tribal separation. Colonial policies often favored certain ethnic groups over others, creating inequalities and resentment that persist to this day. The arbitrary drawing of boundaries also lumped different ethnic groups together, leading to conflict and competition.
