Lesson Content/Board Summary

The Apostles’ Creed

Meaning of Creed

A creed is a statement or confession of faith, a summary of religious beliefs. The word “creed” comes from the Latin word “credo,” which means “I believe.” Creeds help Christians state their fundamental beliefs, unite believers, and guide teaching.

Content of the Apostles’ Creed

The Apostles’ Creed outlines the fundamental beliefs of Christianity. It covers:

  • Belief in God the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.
  • Belief in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, His conception by the Holy Spirit, birth of the Virgin Mary, suffering, crucifixion, death, burial, descent to the dead, resurrection, ascension, and future return to judge the living and the dead.
  • Belief in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church (universal church), the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Trinitarian Nature of the Apostles’ Creed

The Apostles’ Creed is structured around the three persons of the Godhead, reflecting the doctrine of the Holy Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit). This is evident in its three main parts:

  • Part 1: God the Father – “I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.”
  • Part 2: God the Son – “I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord… (details about His life, death, resurrection, and ascension).”
  • Part 3: God the Holy Spirit – “I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.”

Memory Verse

Romans 10:9 – “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”

Bible Reading

  • John 1:1-3
  • Matthew 28:19
  • 1 Corinthians 15:3-4
