Lesson Content/Board Summary

Leadership

Meaning of Leadership

Leadership is the ability to guide, influence, and direct a group of people towards achieving a common goal. It involves taking responsibility, making wise decisions, and demonstrating good character.

The following are qualities of a good leader:

  • Integrity: Being honest and having strong moral principles.
  • Humility: Not being arrogant or proud.
  • Wisdom: The ability to make good judgments and decisions.
  • Responsibility: Being accountable for actions and duties.
  • Forgiveness: The willingness to pardon others for wrongs committed.
  • Vision: Having a clear idea of what to achieve.
  • Empathy: Understanding and sharing the feelings of others.

Joseph as a Leader

Joseph, a son of Jacob, serves as an excellent example of a leader in the Bible. Despite facing numerous challenges, he demonstrated remarkable qualities that led him to a position of great influence and enabled him to save his family and a nation.

Joseph’s Early Life and Arrival in Egypt (Genesis 37:1-28)

Joseph was the beloved son of Jacob, which made his brothers jealous. He had dreams that foretold his future greatness. His brothers conspired against him, threw him into a pit, and later sold him into slavery to Ishmaelite traders, who took him to Egypt. In Egypt, he was sold to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh.

Leadership traits shown:

  • Resilience: His ability to recover quickly from difficult situations.
  • Faith in God: His continued trust in God despite adversity.

Joseph the Governor of Egypt (Genesis 41:1-57)

In Egypt, Joseph was falsely accused by Potiphar’s wife and imprisoned. While in prison, he interpreted the dreams of Pharaoh’s cupbearer and baker. Later, Pharaoh had two disturbing dreams which Joseph interpreted as seven years of abundance followed by seven years of severe famine. Joseph advised Pharaoh to appoint a wise man to oversee the collection and storage of grain during the years of plenty. Impressed by Joseph’s wisdom, Pharaoh appointed him as governor over all Egypt, second only to Pharaoh himself. Joseph managed the famine effectively, saving Egypt and surrounding nations.

Leadership traits shown:

  • Wisdom: Demonstrated through his interpretation of dreams and strategic planning.
  • Strategic planning: His advice to store grain during abundance.
  • Service: His dedication to the welfare of Egypt.
  • Integrity: Maintaining his character even in high office.

Joseph Reconciles with His Brothers (Genesis 45:1-15)

During the famine, Joseph’s brothers came to Egypt to buy food. They did not recognize Joseph, but he recognized them. After a series of tests, Joseph revealed his identity to his brothers. He forgave them for their past actions, understanding that God had used their evil for good. He brought his entire family to Egypt, providing them with the best land.

Leadership traits shown:

  • Forgiveness: Pardoning his brothers who wronged him.
  • Compassion: Showing mercy and care for his family.
  • Reconciliation: Restoring broken relationships.

Memory Verse

Genesis 50:20 – “But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive.”
