Lesson Content/Board Summary

Consequences of Disobedience

Meaning of Consequences of Disobedience

Consequences of disobedience refer to the results or outcomes that follow when an individual fails to obey a command, rule, or instruction. These results are often negative and can be immediate or delayed.

Memory Verse

Proverbs 14:12: “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.”

Bible Reading

  • I Kings 13:11-24
  • I Samuel 2:22-25
  • I Samuel 4:10-11

Examples of Disobedience and Their Consequences

  • The Disobedient Prophet (I Kings 13:11-24):

A prophet from Judah was sent by God to Bethel with strict instructions not to eat or drink there, nor to return by the same way. He delivered God’s message but was later deceived by an old prophet who lied, claiming an angel had told him to bring the Judahite prophet back to eat and drink. The Judahite prophet disobeyed God’s original command. As a consequence, he was killed by a lion on his way home, as God had foretold through the old prophet.

  • The Sons of Eli (I Samuel 2:22-25, I Samuel 4:10-11):

Hophni and Phinehas, the sons of Eli the High Priest, were priests themselves but behaved wickedly. They abused their priestly duties by taking the best portions of sacrifices meant for God and committed immorality with women who served at the entrance to the tabernacle. Despite Eli rebuking them, they refused to listen to their father or God. As a consequence, God sent a prophet to Eli to announce judgment upon his house. Both Hophni and Phinehas were killed on the same day in battle against the Philistines, and the Ark of God was captured. Eli, upon hearing the news, fell backward and died.

Types of Consequences of Disobedience

  • Immediate Consequences: These are results that occur very soon after an act of disobedience. They are often direct and quick to manifest.

    • Example: A child who disobeys a parent’s warning not to touch a hot stove immediately feels pain from the burn.
    • Example: The disobedient prophet was immediately killed by a lion shortly after his act of disobedience.
  • Delayed Consequences: These are results that do not appear immediately but manifest over a period of time, sometimes much later after the act of disobedience. They can accumulate or unfold gradually.

    • Example: A student who consistently disobeys study rules may experience failure in examinations much later.
    • Example: The judgment on Eli’s household for his sons’ disobedience was foretold and eventually came to pass with their deaths and the capture of the Ark.

Lessons from Biblical Examples

  • God takes disobedience seriously, especially from those in positions of spiritual authority.
  • Disobedience can lead to severe personal suffering and even death.
  • Even leaders like Eli can suffer consequences for failing to restrain the disobedience of those under their care.
  • Consequences of disobedience can affect not only the individual but also their family and community.
  • God’s judgment is certain, whether immediate or delayed.
