Meaning of True Religion

True religion is about living a life that reflects God’s character. It includes:

  • Living in purity (cleanliness of heart and actions).
  • Upholding justice (fairness and righteousness in dealings with others).
  • Sincere worship (genuine devotion and obedience to God).

What True Religion is NOT

According to Prophet Amos, true religion is not merely:

  • Attending church services and programmes (Amos 5:21-23).
  • Contributing to the church without a change of heart (Amos 5:25).
  • Engaging in empty rituals or sacrifices (Amos 4:4-5).

God rejects such outward observances when they are not accompanied by genuine righteousness and justice.

Demands of True Religion

True religion demands:

  • Purity of heart (Amos 5:4).
  • Honest desire to seek God and do good (Amos 5:14-15).
  • Justice and righteousness in all aspects of life (Amos 5:24).

Social Vices at the Time of Amos

During Amos’ time, the people of Israel practiced various social vices despite their religious observances. These included:

  • Oppression of the poor and needy (Amos 2:6-7).
  • Selling the righteous for silver and the needy for a pair of sandals (Amos 2:6).
  • Defiling God’s holy name through immorality (Amos 2:7-8).
  • Extortion and bribery (Amos 5:7, Amos 5:12).
  • Perverting justice in the courts (Amos 5:7, Amos 5:12).
  • Exploitation of the vulnerable (Amos 4:1-2).
  • Luxury and self-indulgence at the expense of others (Amos 4:1-2).

These vices are similar to many social injustices seen in contemporary society.
