Balanced Diet: This is a diet that contains all the essential nutrients in the right proportions to meet the body’s needs for growth, energy, and maintenance of health.
Importance of Foods and Nutrition
Foods and good nutrition are crucial for several reasons:
- Provides Energy: Food supplies the energy needed for all bodily functions, including movement, breathing, and thinking.

Classification by Origin
Foods can be classified based on where they come from:
- Plant Origin: Foods derived from plants.
- Cereals: Rice, maize, millet, wheat
- Legumes: Beans, groundnuts, soybeans
- Fruits: Oranges, apples, mangoes, bananas
- Vegetables: Spinach, cabbage, tomatoes, onions
- Roots and Tubers: Yam, cassava, potato, cocoyam
- Animal Origin: Foods derived from animals.

- Marasmus: Caused by severe deficiency of both protein and calories, leading to extreme thinness, muscle wasting, and stunted growth.
- Anaemia: Caused by iron deficiency, leading to fatigue, weakness, and pale skin.
- Vitamin Deficiencies: Can lead to conditions like night blindness (Vitamin A), scurvy (Vitamin C), and rickets (Vitamin D).
- Over-nutrition: Occurs when the body takes in too many nutrients, especially calories.
- Obesity: Excessive accumulation of body fat, leading to increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure.
