Functions of Ground Floors

The ground floor is a fundamental part of any building. Its main functions include:

  • To provide thermal insulation, keeping the building warm or cool.

Types of Ground Floors

Ground floors are broadly classified into two main types:

  • Solid Ground Floors
  • Suspended Ground Floors

Solid Ground Floor

A solid ground floor is one that rests directly on the prepared ground beneath it. It is commonly used where the ground is stable and not susceptible to significant movement.

The following are the basic components of a typical solid ground floor (from bottom to top):

  • Hardcore: A layer of broken bricks, stones, or concrete rubble laid directly on the earth to provide a firm, level base and prevent rising damp.
  • Blinding: A thin layer of sand or fine aggregate spread over the hardcore to fill voids and create a smooth surface for the damp-proof membrane.
  • Damp-Proof Membrane (DPM): A continuous layer of impervious material (e.g., thick polythene sheet or asphalt) laid over the blinding to prevent moisture from rising from the ground into the floor structure.
  • Concrete Slab: A layer of concrete (usually reinforced) laid over the DPM, forming the main structural element of the floor.
  • Screed: A thin layer of cement and sand mortar laid on top of the concrete slab to provide a smooth and level surface for the final floor finish.
  • Floor Finish: The topmost layer, such as tiles, carpet, timber, or terrazzo, chosen for aesthetic appeal, durability, and function.

Suspended Ground Floor

A suspended ground floor is a floor that is raised above the ground level, creating a void or air space beneath it. This type of floor is often used on sloping sites, in areas prone to dampness, or where services need to run beneath the floor.

Suspended floors typically consist of timber joists or concrete beams and slabs supported by dwarf walls or piers, with a sub-floor ventilation system to prevent dampness and rot.
