Definition of Setting Out

  • Measuring Tapes: Used for measuring distances accurately. Available in steel (more durable) and linen (flexible).

  • Transfer Lines to Profile Boards: Transfer the building lines from the corner pegs to the profile boards using a plumb bob, and nail the lines to the boards. This allows pegs to be removed for excavation without losing the building outline.

Checking Right Angles during Setting Out

It is important to ensure all corners are perfectly 90 degrees. The following are common methods:

  • Using a Builder’s Square: Place the builder’s square at each corner to visually check the right angle.
  • The 3-4-5 Method (Pythagorean Theorem):

    This method uses the principle that a triangle with sides in the ratio 3:4:5 will always have a right angle between the sides of length 3 and 4. To use this:
