Meaning of Foundation
A foundation is the lowest part of a structure that transfers the load of the building safely to the ground. It is the part of the building that is usually below ground level.
Purpose of Foundation
The following are the purposes of a foundation:
- To distribute the load of the superstructure over a larger area of soil.
- To prevent unequal settlement of the building.
- To provide a level surface for the construction of the superstructure.
- To increase the stability of the building against overturning and sliding.
- To prevent moisture from rising into the building.
Functional Requirements of Foundation
A good foundation must meet certain requirements to perform its function effectively. The following are the functional requirements of a foundation:
- Stability: The foundation must be stable enough to withstand all loads without overturning or sliding. It must resist external forces like wind and seismic activities.
- Load Transfer: It must safely transfer the entire load of the building (dead load and live load) to the supporting soil at a uniform rate.
- Differential Settlement: It should prevent or minimize differential settlement, which is uneven sinking of different parts of the building, to avoid cracks and structural damage.
- Resistance to Soil Movement: The foundation should be designed to resist movements caused by changes in soil volume (e.g., swelling or shrinkage due to moisture changes).
- Durability: It must be durable and resistant to decay, chemical attacks, and other environmental factors that could weaken it over time.
- Economic Design: The foundation should be designed to be economical in terms of materials and construction methods, without compromising safety and functionality.
Basic Foundation Types/Sketches
Foundations can be broadly classified into shallow foundations and deep foundations. Examples include strip foundations, pad foundations, and raft foundations.
- Strip Foundation: Used for load-bearing walls, forming continuous strips of concrete.
- Pad Foundation: Used for isolated columns, forming individual pads of concrete.
