Teaching Methods/Instructional Techniques
Discussion, Lecture, Demonstration, Question and Answer, Visual Aids
Instructional Procedures
Step 1: Introduction
Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Set Induction
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher presents a short written jawabi or waƙa and asks pupils to identify the title and predict the message.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils observe the text and give predictions based on the title and opening lines.
Learning Point: Understanding begins with careful reading and identifying the message.
Step 2: Meaning of Auna Fahimta
Time: 6 minutes
Teaching Skill: Explanation
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher explains auna fahimta and writes the definition on the board with simple examples.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils copy the definition and give one example of how comprehension is tested.
Learning Point: Auna fahimta checks understanding through questions and evidence.
Step 3: Sigogin Auna Fahimta
Time: 7 minutes
Teaching Skill: Demonstration
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher displays a chart of sigogi and explains each briefly (jigo, details, vocabulary, evidence).
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils read the chart and mention two sigogi with short explanations.
Learning Point: Clear indicators show what to look for when reading a text.
Step 4: Guided Reading of Jawabi/Waƙa
Time: 7 minutes
Teaching Skill: Guided Practice
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher reads the text aloud and guides pupils to identify key lines and unfamiliar words.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils follow the reading, underline key lines, and note unfamiliar words.
Learning Point: Identifying key points supports correct answers.
Step 5: Answering Questions from Jawabi
Time: 6 minutes
Teaching Skill: Question and Answer
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher presents sample questions from the jawabi and models how to locate answers and give evidence.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils answer two questions and point to the part of the text that supports each answer.
Learning Point: Answers to jawabi questions must be based on the text.
Step 6: Answering Questions from Waƙa and Giving Evidence
Time: 9 minutes
Teaching Skill: Supervised Practice
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher gives a short set of questions from the waƙa (message, meaning of words, evidence) and supervises pupils as they respond.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils answer questions and write one evidence line/baiti that supports an answer.
Learning Point: Evidence strengthens comprehension answers for waƙa questions.
Step 7: Evaluation/Review
Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Questioning/Assessment
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher evaluates the learning by asking the following questions:
- Define auna fahimta.
- List five sigogin auna fahimta.
- State two steps for answering questions from a written jawabi.
- Explain how to give hujja from a waƙa to support an answer.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils answer orally and in writing.
Learning Point: Pupils demonstrate understanding of the lesson.
Step 8: Conclusion
Time: 1 minute
Teaching Skill: Summary/Closure
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher summarises key points and gives an assignment: pupils read a short text (jawabi/waƙa), answer five questions, and provide evidence for two answers.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils copy the assignment and ask questions for clarity where necessary.

Lesson Keywords
- Auna fahimta – Testing understanding of a written text through questions and evidence.
- Sigogi – Indicators used to judge how well a learner understood a text.
- Jawabi – A written speech with an organised message.
- Waƙa – A poem arranged in lines and stanzas (baitoci) with a message.
- Jigo – The main idea or message of a text.
- Hujja – Evidence from a text that supports an answer.
Differentiation
Pupils who need support will answer fewer questions with guided hints and a prepared list of key lines. Pupils who learn faster will write a short summary of the text and create two additional questions with correct evidence-based answers.
Note for teachers using this lesson plan
Use short, level-appropriate texts with clear vocabulary and message. Insist that pupils point to the part of the text that supports each answer, especially for “me ya sa” and inference questions.
