Nationalism is a feeling of love, pride, and devotion to one’s country. It involves a sense of national identity, unity, and the desire for self-determination.

What is a Nationalist?

A nationalist is a person who strongly supports the interests of their own nation, especially to the exclusion or detriment of the interests of other nations. They advocate for national independence, unity, or self-governance.

Some Nationalists in Nigeria

Nigerian nationalists were individuals who played meaningful roles in the struggle for Nigeria’s independence.

The following are some notable nationalists in Nigeria:

herbert Macaulay: often regarded as the father of Nigerian nationalism.
Nnamdi Azikiwe: A prominent figure in the fight for independence and the first President of Nigeria.
Obafemi Awolowo: A key leader in the independence movement and the first Premier of the Western Region.
Ahmadu Bello: A powerful leader in the Northern Region and a significant figure in Nigerian politics.
Anthony Enahoro: A journalist and politician who moved the motion for Nigeria’s independence in 1953.

Background of Herbert Macaulay

Herbert MacAulay was a Nigerian nationalist, journalist, and musician. He was born on November 14, 1864, in Lagos. He was educated in Lagos and later in England, where he studied civil engineering. Macaulay returned to Nigeria and became a vocal critic of British colonial rule.
