Meaning of Business Organisation
A business organisation is a group of people or an individual who come together to carry out business activities for profit. It provides goods or services to satisfy human wants and needs.
Types of Business Organisation
There are several forms of business organisations based on ownership and management.
The following are the main types of business organisation:
- Sole Proprietorship
- Partnership
- Private Limited Liability Company
- Public Limited Liability Company
- Co-operative Society
- Public Corporation
Sole Proprietorship
A sole proprietorship is the simplest and oldest form of business organisation. It is owned, financed, and managed by one person who takes all the profits and bears all the risks.
The following are the characteristics of a sole proprietorship:
- It is owned by one person.
- The owner provides the capital.
- The owner controls and manages the business.
- The owner takes all profits and suffers all losses.
- There is little or no legal formalities to start the business.
- The business has unlimited liability (the owner’s personal property can be used to pay business debts).
Advantages of a Sole Proprietorship
The following are the advantages of a sole proprietorship:
- It is easy and cheap to start.
- The owner takes quick decisions.
- The owner enjoys all profits.
- There is close relationship with customers.
- The owner maintains full control of the business.
Disadvantages of a Sole Proprietorship
The following are the disadvantages of a sole proprietorship:
- It has limited capital.
- The owner bears all risks and losses alone.
- The business may close down if the owner dies or becomes sick.
- The owner works for long hours without assistance.
- It has limited expansion opportunities.
