Rationale for the Lesson

This lesson is important for 5-year-olds as it teaches them practical skills for personal hygiene, which are foundational for their health and well-being. Understanding how to care for their body helps prevent sickness, promotes self-esteem, and encourages them to adopt healthy habits early in life.

Prerequisite/Previous Knowledge

Pupils are generally aware of different parts of their body and may have observed adults or older siblings performing daily hygiene routines at home.

Lesson Content/Board Summary

CARE OF THE BODY: METHODS AND IMPORTANCE

Taking care of our body means keeping ourselves clean and healthy. When we are clean, we feel good and stay strong.

How to take care of the body:

  • Bathing: We bath every day with soap and water to wash away dirt and germs.
  • Brushing teeth: We brush our teeth in the morning and before bed to keep them clean and strong.
  • Washing hands: We wash our hands with soap and water before eating and after using the toilet.
  • Combing hair: We comb our hair to keep it neat and tidy.
  • Wearing clean clothes: We wear clean clothes every day.
  • Cutting nails: We cut our fingernails and toenails short to stop dirt from hiding there.

Importance of taking care of the body:

  • It helps us stay healthy and strong.
  • It makes us look neat and tidy.
  • It makes us feel good and fresh.
  • It stops us from getting sick from germs.

Key Words

  • Clean – not dirty.
  • Healthy – strong and not sick.
  • Germs – tiny things that can make us sick.

What the Teacher Should Show or Draw

The teacher should display charts and posters showing children engaged in various hygiene activities (bathing, brushing, washing hands, combing hair). The teacher should also show the real objects like soap, sponge, toothbrush, and comb.

Clean Body Song

Tune: “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star”

Lyrics:

Wash, wash, wash your hands,
Wash them clean and bright.
Rub them, scrub them, all day long,
Keep them clean and right.

Brush, brush, brush your teeth,
Morning, noon, and night.
Up and down and all around,
Keep them clean and white.

Actions: Mimic washing hands, then mimic brushing teeth.

How to use the rhyme: Sing the song together, performing the actions. Repeat several times to help pupils remember the habits.

Watch and Practise

The teacher will play a short educational video about healthy habits for children to reinforce the lesson on body care.

Teaching Methods/Instructional Techniques

Play-based Learning, Demonstration, Guided Practice, Songs and Rhymes, Storytelling, Picture Talk, Question and Answer, Imitation, Manipulation of Objects, Repetition, Practical Activity.

Instructional Procedures

Step 1: Introduction

Time: 3 minutes

Teaching Skill: Engagement/Recall

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher greets the pupils and asks them what they did this morning to get ready for school (e.g., “Did you bath? Did you brush your teeth?”). The teacher then introduces the topic: “Today, we will learn about how to take care of our bodies and why it’s important.”

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils respond to the teacher’s questions and listen attentively.

Learning Point: Pupils connect daily routines to the lesson topic.

Step 2: Discussing Methods of Body Care

Time: 7 minutes

Teaching Skill: Discussion/Visual Aids

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher displays charts and posters showing different ways of taking care of the body (bathing, brushing, washing hands, combing hair). The teacher discusses each method, showing the real objects (soap, toothbrush, comb) and asking pupils what they are used for.

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils identify the activities in the pictures, name the objects, and participate in the discussion by sharing what they do at home.

Learning Point: Pupils identify various methods of body care.

Step 3: Demonstration and Guided Practice

Time: 5 minutes

Teaching Skill: Demonstration/Imitation

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher demonstrates simple actions for body care (e.g., pretending to scrub with a sponge, brushing teeth motions, washing hands motions, combing hair motions). The teacher encourages pupils to imitate these actions.

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils watch the teacher and imitate the demonstrated actions of bathing, brushing teeth, washing hands, and combing hair.

Learning Point: Pupils demonstrate understanding of body care actions.

Step 4: Rhyme Reinforcement

Time: 3 minutes

Teaching Skill: Song/Repetition

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher leads the pupils in singing the “Clean Body Song” (or a similar hygiene song), encouraging them to perform the actions as they sing.

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils sing the song along with the teacher and perform the actions.

Learning Point: Pupils reinforce learning through song and movement.

Step 5: Discussing the Importance of Body Care

Time: 4 minutes

Teaching Skill: Explanation/Questioning

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher asks, “Why do you think it’s important to keep our bodies clean?” The teacher guides the discussion, explaining that keeping clean helps us stay healthy, look neat, feel good, and prevents sickness from germs.

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils offer their ideas and listen to the teacher’s explanations about the importance of body care.

Learning Point: Pupils understand why body care is important.

Step 6: Video Reinforcement

Time: 4 minutes

Teaching Skill: Visual Learning

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher plays the educational video on healthy habits for children. After the video, the teacher asks pupils to name one thing they saw in the video about keeping clean.

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils watch the video and then respond to the teacher’s question.

Learning Point: Pupils reinforce understanding through visual and auditory input.

Step 7: Evaluation/Review

Time: 4 minutes

Teaching Skill: Questioning/Assessment

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher checks pupils’ understanding through short questions and practical tasks.

  1. “Show me how you brush your teeth.”
  2. “Tell me one way to take care of your body.”
  3. “Why should we wash our hands before eating?”
  4. “Point to the picture that shows someone taking a bath.” (Using a chart/poster)

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils respond orally and demonstrate the required skill where appropriate.

Learning Point: Pupils demonstrate understanding of the lesson.

Step 8: Conclusion

Time: 1 minute

Teaching Skill: Summary/Reinforcement

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher praises the pupils for their participation and reminds them to always keep their bodies clean to stay healthy and happy. “Remember, a clean body is a healthy body!”

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils listen and repeat the key message.

Learning Point: Pupils internalise the importance of body care.

Lesson Keywords

  • Body – the whole physical structure of a person.
  • Care – looking after something.
  • Clean – free from dirt.
  • Healthy – being well and strong.
  • Germs – tiny living things that can make you sick.

Differentiation

  • Support: For pupils who are struggling, the teacher can provide more one-on-one demonstration, use larger picture cards, and ask them to only identify one way of body care. Repetition of the song and actions will also be helpful.
  • Extension: For pupils who grasp the concepts quickly, the teacher can ask them to name more ways to care for their body, explain why each is important, or draw a picture of themselves performing a hygiene activity.

Note for teachers using this lesson plan

Prepare all instructional materials (charts, posters, real objects) before the lesson. Emphasize hands-on demonstration and allow pupils ample opportunity to imitate and practice the actions. Encourage active participation in discussions by creating a safe and fun environment. The goal is for children to understand that keeping clean is a positive and enjoyable routine, not a chore. Observe pupils’ ability to perform the actions and answer simple questions to gauge their understanding. Reinforce the lesson by encouraging pupils to share what they learned with their families at home.
