Meaning of Fertilizer

A fertilizer is any material, organic or inorganic, that is added to the soil to supply one or more plant nutrients essential for the growth of plants. Fertilizers help to replenish soil nutrients that have been depleted by continuous cropping or leaching, thereby improving soil fertility and crop productivity.

Types of Fertilizer

Fertilizers are broadly classified into two main types:

  1. Organic Fertilizers: These are derived from natural sources, such as plant and animal matter. They improve soil structure, water retention, and provide nutrients gradually.
  • Examples:
    1. Farmyard Manure (FYM): Decomposed animal dung mixed with bedding materials.
    2. Compost: Decomposed organic matter from plant residues, kitchen waste, etc.
    3. Green Manure: Crops grown specifically to be ploughed back into the soil while still green to enrich it (e.g., legumes like sunn hemp, mucuna).
    4. Bone Meal: Ground animal bones, rich in phosphorus.
    5. Blood Meal: Dried animal blood, rich in nitrogen.
  • Inorganic/Chemical Fertilizers: These are manufactured chemical compounds containing specific plant nutrients in concentrated forms. They provide nutrients quickly and are often tailored to specific crop needs.
    • Classification based on nutrient content:
      1. Straight Fertilizers: Supply only one primary nutrient.
        1. Nitrogenous Fertilizers: Supply nitrogen (N) for vegetative growth. Examples: Urea (46% N), Ammonium Sulphate (21% N), Calcium Ammonium Nitrate (CAN).
        2. Phosphatic Fertilizers: Supply phosphorus (P) for root development, flowering, and fruiting. Examples: Single Superphosphate (SSP), Triple Superphosphate (TSP).
        3. Potassic Fertilizers: Supply potassium (K) for disease resistance, strong stems, and fruit quality. Examples: Muriate of Potash (MOP), Sulphate of Potash (SOP).
      2. Compound Fertilizers: Supply two or more primary nutrients (N, P, K) in a single granule.
        1. NPK Fertilizers: Contain Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium in varying ratios (e.g., NPK 15:15:15, NPK 20:10:10). The numbers represent the percentage of N, P2O5, and K2O respectively.
      3. Mixed Fertilizers: A physical mixture of two or more straight or compound fertilizers.

    Uses of Fertilizer

    Fertilizers play several critical roles in crop production:

    1. Enhance Plant Growth: They provide essential nutrients like nitrogen for leaf development, phosphorus for root growth and flowering, and potassium for overall plant health and disease resistance.
    2. Increase Crop Yield: By supplying adequate nutrients, fertilizers enable plants to grow vigorously and produce more fruits, grains, or tubers, leading to higher harvests.
    3. Correct Nutrient Deficiencies: Fertilizers can be used to address specific nutrient shortages in the soil, which might otherwise stunt plant growth or cause visible deficiency symptoms (e.g., yellowing leaves due to nitrogen deficiency).
    4. Improve Soil Fertility: Regular application of organic fertilizers, in particular, enhances soil structure, microbial activity, and water-holding capacity, contributing to long-term soil health.
    5. Improve Crop Quality: Adequate nutrient supply can lead to better quality produce, including improved taste, colour, size, and nutritional content.

    Methods of Fertilizer Application

    The method of applying fertilizer depends on the type of fertilizer, the crop, soil type, and environmental conditions. Common methods include:

    1. Broadcasting: Spreading fertilizer uniformly over the entire field, either before planting or to a standing crop. It is suitable for crops with dense stands or when soil fertility is generally low.
    2. Side Placement: Applying fertilizer in bands along the side of the crop rows, usually 5-10 cm away from the plant and 5-7 cm deep. This method ensures nutrients are readily available to the plant roots and reduces nutrient loss.
    3. Ring Method: Applying fertilizer in a circular band around individual plants, especially trees or widely spaced crops. The fertilizer is placed in a shallow furrow or ring dug around the plant, away from the stem, and then covered with soil.
    4. Foliar Application: Spraying a diluted solution of liquid fertilizer directly onto the leaves of plants. This method allows for quick absorption of nutrients, especially useful for correcting micronutrient deficiencies or during critical growth stages.
    5. Fertigation: Applying fertilizers through the irrigation system (e.g., drip irrigation). This allows for precise and efficient delivery of nutrients directly to the root zone, reducing waste.
    6. Band Placement: Placing fertilizer in bands near the seed or plant, either below or to the side, at the time of planting. This is efficient for row crops.
