- Temperature: This is the degree of hotness or coldness of the atmosphere. Different crops have specific temperature requirements for germination, growth, and fruiting. For example, maize and rice thrive in warm temperatures, while temperate crops like wheat prefer cooler conditions. High temperatures can cause water stress, while low temperatures can lead to frost damage.
- Rainfall (Precipitation): This refers to water falling from the atmosphere to the earth’s surface in various forms, such as rain, snow, hail, or dew. Rainfall is crucial for providing water to crops. Its amount, distribution, and intensity throughout the growing season significantly impact crop yields. - Wind: This is the movement of air. Wind can be beneficial by aiding pollination and dispersing seeds, but strong winds can cause physical damage to crops (lodging), increase evapotranspiration, and spread pests and diseases. Windbreaks are often used in horticulture to protect sensitive crops.
- Sunshine/Solar Radiation: This is the amount of light and heat received from the sun. Sunshine is vital for photosynthesis, the process by which plants produce food. The duration and intensity of sunlight affect crop growth, flowering, and fruiting. Crops like tomatoes and peppers require ample sunshine, while some leafy vegetables prefer partial shade.
- Atmospheric Pressure: This is the force exerted by the weight of the air on the Earth’s surface. While not as directly impactful on crop growth as other elements, changes in atmospheric pressure are associated with weather changes, which indirectly affect agricultural operations.
