The components of crop ecology are broadly categorised into two main groups:
- Biotic Components: These are the living organisms that interact with crops.
- Crops: The cultivated plants themselves.
- Weeds: Unwanted plants that compete with crops for resources.
- Pests: Insects, rodents, birds, and other animals that damage crops.
- Diseases: Pathogens (fungi, bacteria, viruses) that infect crops.
- Beneficial Organisms: Pollinators (e.g., bees), predators of pests, and soil microorganisms (e.g., nitrogen-fixing bacteria, decomposers).
- Humans: Farmers and other individuals involved in crop management.
- Abiotic Components: These are the non-living physical and chemical factors of the environment.

Ecological Zones of Nigeria

- Mangrove Swamp Zone: Found along the coast, characterised by saline soils and high rainfall. Crops include swamp rice and some vegetables.
- Freshwater Swamp Zone: Inland from the mangrove swamps, with less saline water. Suitable for swamp rice, oil palm.
- Rainforest Zone: High rainfall, dense vegetation, fertile soils. Major crops include cocoa, oil palm, rubber, cassava, yam, maize.
- Derived Savanna Zone: Transition zone between rainforest and guinea savanna, with moderate rainfall. Crops include maize, yam, cassava, vegetables.
- Southern Guinea Savanna Zone: Characterised by tall grasses and scattered trees, with distinct wet and dry seasons. Crops include maize, sorghum, millet, yam, groundnut, cotton.
- Northern Guinea Savanna Zone: Drier than Southern Guinea Savanna, with shorter grasses. Crops include sorghum, millet, groundnut, cotton.
- Sudan Savanna Zone: Arid to semi-arid, with low rainfall and sparse vegetation. Crops include millet, sorghum, groundnut, cowpea.
- Sahel Savanna Zone: Very dry, extreme northern part of Nigeria, with very low rainfall. Limited crop production, mainly drought-resistant varieties like millet and some legumes.
Soil Factors for Planting
Soil provides physical support, water, nutrients, and aeration for plant roots. Key soil factors influencing planting and crop growth include:
- Soil Texture: Refers to the proportion of sand, silt, and clay particles.
- Sandy soils: Good aeration, poor water retention, low nutrient holding capacity.
- Clayey soils: Poor aeration, good water retention, high nutrient holding capacity.
- Loamy soils: Ideal balance of sand, silt, and clay, offering good aeration, water retention, and nutrient availability.
- Soil Structure: The arrangement of soil particles into aggregates. Good soil structure allows for proper root penetration, water infiltration, and aeration.
- Soil pH: A measure of soil acidity or alkalinity. Most crops prefer a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.0) for optimal nutrient availability.
- Soil Organic Matter: Decomposed plant and animal remains. Improves soil structure, water retention, nutrient supply, and microbial activity.
- Soil Fertility/Nutrient Content: The availability of essential plant nutrients (e.g., nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium).
- Soil Water-Holding Capacity: The ability of the soil to retain water for plant use. Important for drought resistance and reducing irrigation needs.
- Soil Aeration: The presence of air in the soil, essential for root respiration and microbial activity. Compacted soils have poor aeration.
Weather Conditions for Planting
Weather conditions are crucial for successful planting and crop establishment:
- Rainfall: Adequate and well-distributed rainfall is essential for seed germination, seedling establishment, and overall plant growth. Planting should coincide with the onset of the rainy season.
- Temperature: Each crop has an optimal temperature range for germination, growth, and development. Extreme temperatures (too hot or too cold) can inhibit growth or cause damage.
- Sunlight (Solar Radiation): Provides energy for photosynthesis. Adequate sunlight duration and intensity are vital for crop yield.
- Humidity: The amount of moisture in the air. High humidity can promote fungal diseases, while very low humidity can lead to excessive transpiration and water stress.
- Wind: Moderate wind can aid pollination and reduce humidity, but strong winds can cause physical damage to plants (lodging) and increase water loss.
What Planting Is
