Characteristics of Horticultural Crops

Horticultural crops generally possess the following characteristics:

  1. They are usually grown on relatively small land areas compared to field crops.
  2. They require intensive care and management, including specific pruning, watering, and pest control.
  3. Many horticultural products are perishable and require careful handling and storage after harvest.
  4. They often have high economic value per unit area.
  5. They include a wide range of plants such as fruits, vegetables, ornamentals, spices, and medicinal plants.

Types of Horticultural Crops

Horticultural crops are broadly classified into the following types:

    Examples: Tomato, Okra, Spinach (Tete), Fluted Pumpkin (Ugu), Cabbage, Carrot, Onion, Pepper, Garden Egg.

    Field Context/Management: Often grown in market gardens or smaller plots, requiring frequent watering, nutrient management, and pest control due to their typically short growth cycle and tender nature. Many are harvested multiple times.

  3. Ornamentals: These are plants grown primarily for their aesthetic appeal, used to beautify landscapes, homes, and public spaces. They include flowers, shrubs, trees, and foliage plants.

    Examples: Roses, Hibiscus, Bougainvillea, Crotons, Ferns, Lawn grasses.

    Field Context/Management: Cultivated in nurseries, gardens, or pots. Management focuses on pruning for shape, flowering, disease prevention, and specific light/water requirements to maintain visual appeal.

  4. Spices and Condiments: These are aromatic plant parts (seeds, fruits, roots, bark) used in small quantities to flavour food, preserve it, or add colour.

    Examples: Ginger, Garlic, Pepper (Chilli), Turmeric, Cloves, Nutmeg.

    Field Context/Management: Often grown as intercrops or in specific plots. Management involves careful harvesting, drying, and processing to preserve their flavour and aroma. Some are root crops, others fruits or seeds.

  5. Medicinal and Aromatic Plants: These are plants that contain compounds used for therapeutic purposes or for their distinctive fragrances.

    Examples: Aloe Vera, Scent Leaf (Ocimum gratissimum), Neem, Lemon Grass, Moringa.

    Field Context/Management: May be wild-harvested or cultivated. Management involves sustainable harvesting practices, specific drying or extraction methods, and protection from over-exploitation. Their observable characteristics include unique leaf shapes, strong scents, or distinct sap.

Crop Varieties

A crop variety refers to a subgroup within a particular crop species that has been developed or selected for specific desirable characteristics, making it distinct from other subgroups of the same species. These characteristics can include differences in yield, maturity period, disease resistance, fruit size, colour, taste, or adaptation to specific environmental conditions.

Examples of Crop Varieties:

  1. Maize: Varieties like “Oba Super” (high yielding), “TZSR-Y” (streak virus resistant), or specific early-maturing varieties.
  2. Yam: Varieties such as “Puna” (white yam), “Dan Anacha” (yellow yam), or “TDR 89/02665” (improved variety).
  3. Cassava: Varieties like “TMS 30572” (high yielding), “NR 8082” (early bulking), or “TME 419” (disease resistant).
  4. Rice: Varieties such as “Ofada rice” (local aromatic variety), “FARO 44” (NERICA L-19, high yielding), or “IR8” (semi-dwarf, high yielding).
  5. Tomato: Varieties like “Roma” (plum-shaped, good for processing), “Money Maker” (round, good for fresh market), or “UC 82B” (heat tolerant).
