Types of Inorganic Fertilizers
Inorganic fertilizers, also known as chemical or synthetic fertilizers, are manufactured from chemical compounds. They are concentrated and supply specific nutrients to plants. They are classified based on the major nutrient they provide:
- Nitrogenous Fertilizers: These supply nitrogen (N), which is essential for vegetative growth (leaves and stems) and gives plants their green colour. Nitrogen deficiency leads to yellowing of leaves (chlorosis). Examples include Urea (46% N) and Ammonium Sulphate (21% N).
- Phosphatic Fertilizers: These supply phosphorus (P), which promotes root development, flowering, fruiting, and seed formation. Phosphorus deficiency can cause stunted growth and purplish discolouration of leaves. Examples include Single Superphosphate (SSP) and Triple Superphosphate (TSP).
- Potassic Fertilizers: These supply potassium (K), which helps in overall plant vigour, disease resistance, water regulation, and fruit quality. Potassium deficiency can lead to yellowing or browning of leaf margins (scorching) and weak stems. An example is Muriate of Potash (MOP) or Potassium Chloride.
- Compound Fertilizers: These contain a combination of two or more primary nutrients (Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium) in varying proportions. They are often labelled as NPK fertilizers (e.g., NPK 15-15-15, NPK 20-10-10). They provide a balanced supply of nutrients.
Methods of Fertilizer Application
The choice of fertilizer application method depends on the type of crop, fertilizer, soil, and environmental conditions. Common methods include:
- Broadcasting: This involves scattering the granular fertilizer evenly over the entire soil surface, either before planting or to an established crop. It is suitable for crops planted close together.
- Side Dressing: Fertilizer is applied in a band along the side of the crop row, usually a few inches away from the plant stem to avoid direct contact and burning. This method is effective for row crops.
- Ring Application: Fertilizer is applied in a circular band around individual plants, typically for trees, shrubs, or widely spaced crops. The fertilizer is dug into the soil slightly and covered.
- Band Placement: Fertilizer is placed in bands on one or both sides of the seed row, either at planting time or shortly after. The bands are usually a few inches away from the seed and slightly below it.
- Foliar Application: A diluted solution of liquid fertilizer is sprayed directly onto the leaves of plants. This method allows for quick absorption of nutrients, especially when plants show signs of deficiency, but it is a temporary measure.
- Fertigation: This is the application of fertilizers through an irrigation system (e.g., drip irrigation). The fertilizer is dissolved in the irrigation water and delivered directly to the plant roots, ensuring efficient nutrient and water use.
