- Saves Time and Resources: Planting non-viable seeds wastes time, labour, land, and other resources. Testing seeds beforehand prevents these losses.
- Determines Seeding Rate: Knowing the viability percentage helps farmers calculate the correct amount of seeds to plant per unit area to achieve the desired plant population.
- Assesses Seed Quality: The test indicates the overall quality of the seed lot, including its health and potential for vigorous growth.

Simple Method of Seed Viability Testing (Germination Test)
One common and simple method to test seed viability is the germination test, often done using the “rag doll” method or Petri dish method.
Materials:
- Seed samples (e.g., 10-20 seeds of the same type)
- Petri dish or shallow bowl
- Tissue paper, blotting paper, or a piece of clean cloth
- Water
Procedure:
- Select Seeds: Carefully select a representative sample of seeds (e.g., 10 or 20 seeds) from the batch to be tested.
- Prepare Medium: Moisten the tissue paper or cloth with water. It should be damp, not soaking wet.
- Arrange Seeds: Place the moistened paper/cloth inside the Petri dish or bowl. Evenly space the selected seeds on the moistened paper/cloth.
- Cover Seeds: Cover the seeds with another layer of moistened tissue paper or cloth, or simply close the Petri dish lid.
- Provide Favourable Conditions: Place the Petri dish/bowl in a warm, dark place, away from direct sunlight, to provide optimal conditions for germination.
- Maintain Moisture: Check the moisture level daily and re-moisten the paper/cloth as needed to prevent it from drying out.
- Observe Germination: Begin observing the seeds after 2-3 days for fast-germinating seeds (e.g., maize, beans) or longer for others. Count the number of seeds that have germinated (showing radicle and plumule development).
- Record Results: Continue observations for about 7-10 days, depending on the seed type. Record the total number of seeds that germinated.
Interpretation of Results:
The germination percentage is calculated using the formula:
