Lesson Content/Board Summary
Speech: Expressing Past Actions
What are Past Actions?
Past actions are things that have already happened. They are actions that are finished.
When we talk about past actions, we use special forms of verbs called past tense verbs.
How to Express Past Actions
To express past actions, we change the verb to its past tense form. Many verbs add ‘-ed’ to show past action, but some change completely.
Examples of verbs and their past forms:
- Present: walk → Past: walked
- Present: play → Past: played
- Present: jump → Past: jumped
- Present: look → Past: looked
- Present: wash → Past: washed
- Present: eat → Past: ate
- Present: go → Past: went
- Present: see → Past: saw
- Present: run → Past: ran
- Present: sleep → Past: slept
Forming Sentences with Past Actions
We use past tense verbs in sentences to talk about things that happened before now.
Examples:
- I walked to school yesterday.
- She played with her friends.
- The boy jumped over the rope.
- We looked at the beautiful flowers.
- My mother washed the clothes.
- He ate an apple.
- They went to the market.
- I saw a bird.
- The dog ran fast.
- The baby slept soundly.
