Gravure and Intaglio Printing

Gravure printing is an intaglio printing process where the image is etched or engraved onto a cylinder. The image areas are recessed (depressed) below the non-image areas.

The process involves the cylinder rotating in an ink fountain, filling the recessed image cells with ink. A doctor blade then scrapes off excess ink from the non-image surface. The substrate (paper or film) is pressed against the cylinder by an impression roller, transferring the ink from the cells to the substrate.

The following are characteristics of Gravure printing:

  • Excellent for high-volume, long-run jobs.
  • Produces high-quality, continuous-tone images.
  • Uses fast-drying, low-viscosity inks.

Screen and Stencil Printing

Screen printing, also known as serigraphy, is a stencil printing method where ink is forced through a mesh screen onto a substrate. A stencil is created on the screen, blocking the ink from passing through non-image areas.

The process involves placing the screen over the substrate. Ink is applied to the top of the screen and a squeegee is used to push the ink through the open mesh areas of the stencil onto the material below.

The following are characteristics of Screen printing:

  • Versatile; can print on various materials (textiles, paper, plastic, metal).
  • Allows for thick ink deposits, resulting in vibrant colors.
  • Suitable for both short and long runs.

Flexography Printing

Flexography is a relief printing process using a flexible relief plate. The image areas on the plate are raised above the non-image areas.

The process involves ink being transferred from an anilox roller to the raised image areas of the flexible printing plate. The plate then rotates and presses against the substrate, transferring the ink to create the image.

The following are characteristics of Flexography printing:

  • High speed, suitable for continuous patterns and large quantities.
  • Uses fast-drying inks.
  • Commonly used for packaging materials.

Typical Products for Each Process

The following are typical products for each printing process:

  • Gravure Printing: Magazines, catalogues, packaging (flexible packaging, food wrappers), gift wrap, wallpaper, high-volume security printing.
