Personal security refers to measures taken to protect oneself from harm or danger. It is essential for living a safe and healthy life.
Below are five needs for personal security:
- Physical Safety: To prevent harm from accidents or attacks.
- Emotional Security: To ensure mental well-being and avoid stress.
- Health Protection: To avoid illnesses and maintain good hygiene.
- Property Safety: To safeguard belongings from theft or damage.
- Environmental Security: To stay safe in both natural and man-made environments.
Why Personal Security Is Needed
Personal security reduces exposure to injury, abuse, theft, unsafe travel and online manipulation. It includes awareness, planning, protecting private information, choosing safe routes and reporting danger.
A child should know trusted adults, an emergency contact and safe places at home, school and in the community. Security does not mean living in fear or confronting suspects; it means recognising risk and responding calmly.
