Meaning of Farm Produce Preservation

Farm produce preservation involves using methods to keep farm produce fresh and safe for later use. This ensures the produce lasts longer and remains in good condition.

Examples are:

  1. Tomatoes – can be preserved by drying or refrigeration.
  2. Maize – is best preserved through drying or storage in silos.
  3. Carrots – can be preserved using refrigeration.
  4. Cassava – can be processed into flour or dried to preserve it.
  5. Fish – is commonly preserved by smoking or drying.
  6. Beans – can be preserved through drying and proper storage in airtight containers.
  7. Yam – can be preserved by storing in a cool, dry place or processing into yam flour.

Meaning of Farm-produce Preservation

Farm-produce preservation uses suitable methods to slow spoilage, reduce waste and keep produce useful for longer. It acts on moisture, temperature, air, pests or microorganisms, depending on the food.

Preservation does not improve already spoiled food. Start with sound produce, clean tools and a method suited to the crop or animal product.
