Lesson Content/Board Summary

LAND AND THE PEOPLE OF NIGERIA: REGIONAL DIVISIONS

Meaning of Regions in Nigeria

A region, in geography, refers to an area of land that has common features such as climate, vegetation, landforms, and human activities. Nigeria can be divided into distinct geographical regions based on these shared characteristics.

Coastal Regions of Nigeria

The coastal region of Nigeria is the area along the Atlantic Ocean. It is characterized by low-lying land, creeks, lagoons, and mangrove swamps.

The following are characteristics of the Coastal Regions:

  • Low altitude, mostly below 150 meters above sea level.
  • High rainfall throughout the year.
  • Dense mangrove forests and freshwater swamps.
  • Economic activities include fishing, oil exploration, and trade.
  • States in this region include parts of Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River.

Forest Regions of Nigeria

The forest region lies immediately north of the coastal region. It is characterized by dense tropical rainforests, high rainfall, and fertile soil.

The following are characteristics of the Forest Regions:

  • Moderate to high rainfall, usually for a significant part of the year.
  • Rich biodiversity with a variety of trees and animal species.
  • Agriculture (cocoa, rubber, oil palm) is a major economic activity.
  • States in this region include parts of Ogun, Ondo, Edo, Delta, Imo, Abia, Anambra, Enugu, Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River.

Semi-Savannah Regions of Nigeria

The semi-savannah region, also known as the Guinea Savannah, is found north of the forest belt. It is characterized by tall grasses and scattered trees, with distinct wet and dry seasons.

The following are characteristics of the Semi-Savannah Regions:

  • Moderate rainfall, with a clear distinction between rainy and dry seasons.
  • Vegetation consists of tall grasses and deciduous trees.
  • Farming (yam, maize, guinea corn) and cattle rearing are common economic activities.
  • States in this region include parts of Oyo, Kwara, Kogi, Benue, Taraba, Adamawa, Kaduna, Plateau, Nasarawa, and the Federal Capital Territory.

Identifying Regions on a Map

Geographical regions can be identified on a map by looking at features like vegetation patterns, elevation, and proximity to water bodies. Color codes are often used to represent different climatic or vegetation zones.

Teaching Methods/Instructional Techniques

Discussion, Lecture, Demonstration, Question and Answer, Visual Aids

Instructional Procedures

Step 1: Introduction

Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Set Induction
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher greets the pupils, reviews the previous lesson briefly, and then asks pupils if they know what makes different parts of Nigeria look different (e.g., some areas have many trees, some are near the sea). The teacher then introduces the topic: “Land and the People of Nigeria: Regional Divisions.”
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils respond to questions and listen attentively to the introduction.
Learning Point: Pupils are prepared for the new lesson and connect it to their general knowledge of Nigeria.

Step 2: Explanation of Regions

Time: 7 minutes
Teaching Skill: Explanation/Definition
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher defines what a geographical region is, explaining that it is an area with shared characteristics. The teacher points to a map of Nigeria and explains how different areas have different features.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils listen, ask questions for clarity, and observe the map.
Learning Point: Pupils understand the concept of a geographical region in the context of Nigeria.

Step 3: Coastal Regions of Nigeria

Time: 8 minutes
Teaching Skill: Demonstration/Description
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher uses the physical map of Nigeria to point out and describe the coastal regions. The teacher highlights characteristics like proximity to the ocean, presence of creeks, lagoons, and mangrove swamps, and mentions typical economic activities and some states found in this region.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils observe the map, listen to the descriptions, and identify the coastal regions as pointed out by the teacher.
Learning Point: Pupils can identify and describe the key features of Nigeria’s coastal regions.

Step 4: Forest Regions of Nigeria

Time: 8 minutes
Teaching Skill: Demonstration/Description
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher moves on to describe the forest regions, locating them on the map. The teacher explains their characteristics, such as dense tropical rainforests, high rainfall, and major agricultural products, mentioning relevant states.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils continue to observe the map, listen to the descriptions, and identify the forest regions.
Learning Point: Pupils can identify and describe the key features of Nigeria’s forest regions.

Step 5: Semi-Savannah Regions of Nigeria

Time: 8 minutes
Teaching Skill: Demonstration/Description
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher then identifies the semi-savannah regions on the map, highlighting their location north of the forest belt. The teacher describes the vegetation (tall grasses, scattered trees), rainfall patterns, and common economic activities like farming and cattle rearing, and lists some states in this region.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils observe the map, listen to the descriptions, and identify the semi-savannah regions.
Learning Point: Pupils can identify and describe the key features of Nigeria’s semi-savannah regions.

Step 6: Map Identification Practice

Time: 4 minutes
Teaching Skill: Practical Application
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher asks individual pupils to come forward and point to each of the three regions (Coastal, Forest, Semi-Savannah) on the large map. The teacher provides guidance and correction as needed.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils take turns identifying the regions on the map, actively participating in the exercise.
Learning Point: Pupils practice and improve their ability to locate the geographical regions of Nigeria on a map.

Step 7: Evaluation/Review

Time: 5 minutes

Teaching Skill: Questioning/Assessment

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher evaluates the learning by asking the following questions:

  1. What is a geographical region?
  2. Mention the three main geographical regions of Nigeria discussed today.
  3. State two characteristics of the Coastal Region.
  4. List two economic activities common in the Forest Region.
  5. On the map, point out the Semi-Savannah Region.

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils answer orally and in writing.

Learning Point: Pupils demonstrate understanding of the lesson.

Step 8: Conclusion

Time: 2 minutes
Teaching Skill: Summarization/Assignment
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher briefly summarizes the lesson, emphasizing the diversity of Nigeria’s land and people. The teacher then assigns homework: “Draw an outline map of Nigeria and indicate the Coastal, Forest, and Semi-Savannah regions.”
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils listen to the summary and copy the homework assignment.
Learning Point: Pupils consolidate their learning and are given an opportunity to apply their knowledge.

Lesson Keywords

  • Region – An area of land with common features.
  • Coastal Region – Low-lying land along the sea, with creeks and lagoons.
  • Forest Region – Area with dense tropical rainforests.
  • Semi-Savannah – Region with tall grasses and scattered trees, also known as Guinea Savannah.
  • Geography – The study of the physical features of the earth and its atmosphere, and of human activity as it affects and is affected by these.

Differentiation

For pupils who grasp concepts quickly, the teacher can ask them to name more states in each region or describe the specific types of crops grown. For pupils needing more support, the teacher can provide pre-labelled regional maps or focus on identifying just one characteristic per region.

Note for teachers using this lesson plan

Ensure the map used is clear and large enough for all pupils to see. Encourage active participation by asking various pupils to point out locations. Emphasize the connection between geography and the history/culture of the people in each region.
