Lesson Content
Examples of the Legislative Arm of Government
The legislative arm of government is responsible for making laws and representing the interests of the people. It ensures that laws are made to maintain order and promote justice. Examples are:
- Senate: This is one of the chambers in the National Assembly responsible for making laws at the federal level.
- House of Representatives: The second chamber in the National Assembly, which works alongside the Senate.
- State House of Assembly: The legislative body for each state, responsible for making laws at the state level.
- Councillors: Elected officials who represent wards in local government councils.
- National Assembly: The combination of the Senate and House of Representatives.
Examples of Legislative Institutions
The legislative arm makes laws and represents the people. At the federal level, Nigeria’s National Assembly has the Senate and House of Representatives. A state has a House of Assembly. Local councils make by-laws within powers given by law.
Legislators debate bills, approve budgets, represent constituencies and oversee public institutions. They do not normally arrest offenders or decide court cases; those functions belong to law-enforcement agencies and the judiciary.
