Note for teachers using this lesson plan

This lesson introduces Primary 1 pupils to Tanween in Arabic, focusing on its pronunciation and application to simple letters and words. Teachers should prepare visual aids like flashcards or a projector to display Arabic letters and words clearly. The central concept is for pupils to correctly identify, pronounce, and read words with Tanween, ensuring they grasp the ‘n’ sound associated with it. Rationale for the Lesson

This lesson is important because it introduces pupils to Tanween, a fundamental aspect of Arabic pronunciation and reading. Mastering Tanween helps pupils read Arabic words more accurately and fluently, which is crucial for understanding the Holy Qur’an and other Arabic texts. It builds a strong foundation for future Arabic language learning.

Prerequisite/Previous Knowledge

Pupils are expected to have prior knowledge of basic Arabic letters (Huroof al-Hijaa’iyah) and short vowels (Harakat) such as Fathah, Kasrah, and Dhammah.

Lesson Content/Board Summary

التَّنْوِينُ (Tanween)

Tanween (التَّنْوِين) is a double-vowel ending that adds an n sound to the end of an indefinite word.

Tanween (تنوين) is a special mark in Arabic that makes a short vowel sound like it has a silent ‘n’ (ن) at the end. It is pronounced at the end of an indefinite word without writing a separate ن.

There are three main types of Tanween:

  1. Tanween Fath (تنوين فتح): This looks like two Fathah marks (ً) above the last letter of a word. It makes an “an” sound. It is often followed by an Alif (ا) when written, with spelling rules that depend on the final letter of the word.
  2. Tanween Kasr (تنوين كسر): This looks like two Kasrah marks (ٍ) below the last letter of a word. It makes an “in” sound.
  3. Tanween Dhamma (تنوين ضم): This looks like two Dhammah marks (ٌ) above the last letter of a word. It makes an “un” sound.

Examples of Letters with Tanween

  • With Tanween Fath (ً):
    • بً (ban)
    • تً (tan)
    • دً (dan)
  • With Tanween Kasr (ٍ):
    • بٍ (bin)
    • تٍ (tin)
    • دٍ (din)
  • With Tanween Dhamma (ٌ):
    • بٌ (bun)
    • تٌ (tun)
    • دٌ (dun)

Examples of Simple Words with Tanween

some simple words and see how Tanween changes their sound:

  • With Tanween Fath (ً):
    • كِتَابًا (kitaaban – a book)
    • قَلَمًا (qalaman – a pen)
    • بَابًا (baaban – a door)
  • With Tanween Kasr (ٍ):
    • كِتَابٍ (kitaabin – a book)
    • قَلَمٍ (qalamin – a pen)
    • بَابٍ (baabin – a door)
  • With Tanween Dhamma (ٌ):
    • كِتَابٌ (kitaabun – a book)
    • قَلَمٌ (qalamun – a pen)
    • بَابٌ (baabun – a door)

Notice how the ‘n’ sound is added at the end of the word when Tanween is present. This is very important for correct pronunciation.

Teacher Guide for Using This Lesson Plan

Before the lesson, ensure you have your instructional materials ready: a projector or large flashcards displaying Arabic letters and simple words with all three types of Tanween. It is beneficial to have separate cards for each type of Tanween for clear demonstration. Begin by briefly reviewing short vowels to refresh pupils’ memory, as this forms the basis for understanding Tanween.

Present Tanween Fath first, demonstrating its symbol and sound clearly. Use exaggerated pronunciation of the “an” sound initially. Allow ample time for pupils to repeat after you, both individually and as a class. Then, introduce simple words with Tanween Fath, guiding pupils to read them. Follow the same sequence for Tanween Kasr (“in” sound) and Tanween Dhamma (“un” sound). Emphasise the visual difference in the marks and the corresponding sound.

During guided practice, walk around the classroom to observe pupils’ pronunciation and offer immediate feedback. Common errors might include omitting the ‘n’ sound or confusing the different Tanween types. Gently correct these errors through repetition and clear modelling. Encourage pupils to use their fingers to trace the letters and Tanween marks as they pronounce them. Pause after each type of Tanween to allow pupils to copy examples into their notebooks before moving to the next type.

For the evaluation, ensure questions cover both identification and pronunciation. For weaker learners, you might ask them to identify the Tanween type on a given word, while faster learners can be asked to read a short list of words independently. Conclude by reiterating the importance of Tanween in reading Arabic and assign homework that reinforces the lesson’s objectives.
