Early European Contact and Advent of Christianity in Nigeria

The early European contact with Nigeria began mainly through trade and exploration. Later, Christian missionaries followed these explorers to spread Christianity and Western education.

The following are the early missionary arrivals in Nigeria:

The first Christian monks were the Augustinian and Capuchin orders from Portugal, who came to the Benin Empire in the 15th century.
The Church of England mission led by Rev. Henry Townsend arrived Badagry in 1842.
Thomas Birch Freeman of the Methodist Church also arrived in Badagry in 1842.
Rev. Samuel Ajayi Crowther, a former slave, worked as the first African Anglican Bishop and helped translate the Bible into Yoruba.
Mary Slessor, a Scottish missionary, settled in Calabar and stopped the killing of twins.
Rev. Samuel Bill established the Qua Iboe Church in Akwa Ibom State.
Roman Catholic missionaries came later and founded missions in Onitsha and Asaba.

Areas of Missionary Settlement in Nigeria

Missionaries settled in coastal and riverine areas before moving inland.

These include:

Badagry – Church Missionary Society (CMS) and Methodist missions.
