Meaning of Population
Population refers to the total number of people living in a particular area, such as a town, village, school, or country. It can also refer to the total number of items or objects in a group.
Pictograms
A pictogram is a way of representing data using pictures or symbols. Each picture or symbol represents a certain number of items, as indicated by a key.
How to Prepare a Pictogram:
- Collect the data to be represented.
- Choose a simple picture or symbol that relates to the data.
- Decide on a suitable key, which states what each symbol represents (e.g., 1 symbol = 5 pupils).
- Draw the correct number of symbols for each category based on the key.
- Give the pictogram a clear title.
Example 1 (Preparation): Represent the number of pupils in two classes: Primary 6A = 10 pupils, Primary 6B = 15 pupils.
Key:
= 5 pupils
- Primary 6A:
(10 pupils / 5 pupils per icon = 2 icons) - Primary 6B:
(15 pupils / 5 pupils per icon = 3 icons)
How to Interpret a Pictogram:
- Read the title of the pictogram to understand what it shows.
- Look for the key to know what value each symbol represents.
- Count the number of symbols for each category.
- Multiply the count of symbols by the value of the key to find the actual quantity.
Example 2 (Interpretation): A pictogram shows “Number of Fruits Sold”. If apples have 4 symbols, and the Key is 1 symbol = 3 fruits. How many apples were sold?
Number of apples = 4 symbols × 3 fruits/symbol = 12 apples.
Bar Graphs
A bar graph uses bars of different heights or lengths to represent data. The height or length of each bar shows the quantity or value for a particular category.
How to Prepare a Bar Graph:
- Draw two axes: a horizontal axis (x-axis) and a vertical axis (y-axis).
- Label the horizontal axis with the categories (e.g., Boys, Girls, Classes).
- Label the vertical axis with numerical values (e.g., Number of Pupils).
- Choose an appropriate scale for the vertical axis (e.g., 1 unit = 5 pupils).
- Draw rectangular bars of equal width for each category. The height of each bar should correspond to its value on the vertical axis.
- Ensure there is equal space between the bars.
- Give the bar graph a clear title.
Example 1 (Preparation): Represent the number of books read by two pupils: Ali = 15 books, Ngozi = 20 books.

How to Interpret a Bar Graph:

How many more pupils prefer Blue than Red?
Difference = 25 pupils (Blue) – 15 pupils (Red) = 10 pupils.
Comparing Population of Boys and Girls using Charts
To compare the population of boys and girls using charts:
- For Pictograms: Count the number of symbols for boys and girls separately. The category with more symbols has a larger population.
- For Bar Graphs: Look at the height of the bars for boys and girls. The bar that is taller represents a larger population.
Example: A chart shows 25 boys and 30 girls in a class.
By comparing the number of symbols in a pictogram or the height of bars in a bar graph, it can be seen that there are more girls than boys. The difference is 30 – 25 = 5 girls.
