Mansa Kankan Musa (1312–1337)

Mansa Musa was one of the most powerful rulers of the Mali Empire. His reign brought development, stability, and global recognition to Mali.

The following are major achievements of Mansa Musa:

  1. He expanded the territory of the Mali Empire.
  2. He promoted Islamic scholarship and built learning centers.
  3. He enhanced trade and commerce within and outside West Africa.
  4. He undertook a famous pilgrimage to Mecca that showcased Mali’s wealth.
  5. He strengthened the administration through qualified officials.

Rewards for Officials

Officials played important roles in governing the empire. Mansa Musa ensured loyalty by rewarding capable and trustworthy administrators.

These include:

  1. Granting land to loyal officials.
  2. Providing wealth and valuable gifts.
  3. Offering positions of honour and authority.
  4. Giving special privileges to distinguished officers.

Excellent Judicial Administrative System

The Mali Empire had a strong and effective system of justice. Courts were established to settle disputes fairly and protect the rights of citizens.

The following are features of Mali’s judicial system:

  1. Use of Islamic law (Sharia) in major towns.
  2. Appointment of judges (Qadis) to ensure justice.
  3. Maintenance of law and order across the empire.
