It is a conscious decision to release the offender from the debt of their wrongdoing, often inspired by God’s forgiveness towards humanity.

Biblical Basis for Forgiveness

The Bible consistently teaches the importance of forgiveness, both from God to humanity and among individuals. Key passages include:

1. 2 Corinthians 5:18-19: This passage speaks of God reconciling the world to Himself through Christ, entrusting believers with the ministry of reconciliation. It highlights God’s initiative in forgiving humanity.
2. Hebrews 8:12: “For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.” This verse from the New Covenant promises God’s complete forgiveness and forgetfulness of sins.
3. Luke 6:37: “Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.” Jesus instructs His followers to forgive others as a condition for receiving forgiveness themselves.

Importance of Forgiveness

Forgiveness is important for several reasons:

2. The Parable of the Unforgiving Servant (Matthew 18:21-35): This parable, discussed below, is a powerful illustration of Jesus’ teaching on the necessity of boundless forgiveness.

Consequences of Not Forgiving Others

Jesus taught severe consequences for those who refuse to forgive others. The Parable of the Unforgiving Servant in Matthew 18:21-35 clearly illustrates this:

1. The Story: A servant owed his king an enormous debt (ten thousand talents) which the king graciously forgave. However, this same servant then refused to forgive a fellow servant who owed him a much smaller amount (one hundred denarii), having him thrown into prison.
2. The King’s Reaction: When the king heard this, he was furious. He called the unforgiving servant and said, “You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. Should you not also have had compassion on your fellow servant, just as I had pity on you?”
3. The Consequence: The king handed the unforgiving servant over to the torturers until he should pay all that was due him.
4. Jesus’ Application (Matthew 18:35): Jesus concludes the parable by saying, “So My heavenly Father also will do to you if each of you, from his heart, does not forgive his brother his trespasses.”

The consequences of not forgiving others, as taught by Jesus, include:

1. Withholding of God’s Forgiveness: If we do not forgive others, God will not forgive us our sins.
2. Spiritual Bondage: Unforgiveness can lead to spiritual and emotional torment, akin to being “handed over to the torturers.”
3. Damaged Relationships: It hinders reconciliation and perpetuates conflict, leading to broken relationships.
4. Bitterness and Resentment: Holding onto unforgiveness breeds negative emotions that harm one’s own soul and spirit.
