Meaning of Love

Love is a deep feeling of affection, care, and strong liking for someone or something. It involves wishing well for others and acting in their best interest. In Christian context, love is often described as selfless and sacrificial.

God’s Love for Man

God’s love for man is unconditional and everlasting. It is a divine attribute that led Him to create man and continuously seek a relationship with humanity.

The following are characteristics of God’s love:

It is unconditional (Agape).
It is unfailing and everlasting.
It is sacrificial.
It is forgiving.

Extent of God’s Love

The extent of God’s love is limitless and demonstrated through significant acts for humanity.

The following show the extent of God’s love:

Creation: God created man in His own image and gave him dominion over the earth (Genesis 1:26-28).
Provision: God provides for all of man’s needs (Matthew 6:26).
Redemption: God sent His only Son, Jesus Christ, to die for man’s sins to reconcile man back to Himself (John 3:16, Romans 5:8).
Forgiveness: God is always ready to forgive man’s sins when man repents (1 John 1:9).
Guidance: God guides and protects man through His Holy Spirit and His Word (Psalm 23).

Need for Man to Respond to God’s Love

Man needs to respond to God’s love because it is a demonstration of gratitude and obedience to God’s commandments.

Ways man can respond to God’s love include:

Loving God back with all one’s heart, soul, and mind (Matthew 22:37).
Obeying God’s commandments and living according to His will.
Loving one’s neighbour as oneself (Matthew 22:39).
Repenting from sins and seeking His forgiveness.
Worshipping and praising God.
Spreading the Gospel and sharing God’s love with others.
