Types of Views of Solid Shapes

A view is the way an object appears when looked at from a particular direction. Views help us represent 3D objects in 2D form.

The following are the main views used in drawings:

  1. Front view
  2. Side view
  3. Top view (Plan)

Views of Common Solids

Every solid shape has different views depending on how it is observed. These views help us understand the shape’s structure.

The following are views of common solids:

  1. A cube shows a square in all views.
  2. A cuboid shows rectangles of different dimensions.
  3. A cylinder shows a rectangle in side view and a circle in top view.
  4. A cone shows a triangle in front view and a circle in plan view.
  5. A sphere shows a circle in all views.
  6. A prism shows rectangles and polygons based on its ends.

Plan (Top View)

A plan is the view of an object from above. It shows the outline or shape of the top surface.

Examples include:

  1. A cube has a square plan.
  2. A cylinder has a circular plan.
  3. A cuboid has a rectangular plan.

Sketches of Solids

A sketch is a freehand drawing used to represent an object quickly without measurement. It shows shape and major features.
