Reference Materials

The following resources were used in planning this lesson:

  • 9 – Years Basic Education Curriculum
  • Abuja Educational Resource Center Scheme of Work
  • NAPPS National Unified Scheme of Work
  • Online Information from: Techslang – What Is Humanware?
  • Relevant Textbooks

instructional Materials

To deliver this lesson, the teacher will use the following materials:

  • A desktop or laptop computer
  • A projector or chart showing different computer postures
  • pictures illustrating good and bad computer habits
  • A video clip on proper sitting posture while using a computer

Rationale for the Lesson

Understanding humanware is essential because it refers to the people who use computers. Just like hardware and software, human users must be in good health to operate efficiently. This means that taking care of humanware ensures better productivity, prevents health problems, and makes computer usage more comfortable.

Prerequisite/Previous Knowledge

Pupils have learned about safety precautions while using computers, including handling hardware properly. They are also familiar with basic computer operations.

Meaning And Care Of the HumanWare

Meaning of humanware

Humanware refers to the people who use and operate computers, such as students, teachers, office workers, and IT professionals. It includes anyone who interacts with a computer system to perform tasks. Without humanware, computers cannot function effectively as they need human input to process information and execute commands.

Reasons Why We Should take Care of HumanWare (Computer Users)

Taking care of humanware is essential for maintaining health, productivity, and overall well-being.

The following are reasons why we should take care of humanware (computer users):

  1. To Prevent Eye Strain – looking at the screen for too long can hurt the eyes.
  2. To Avoid Back and Neck Pain – Sitting in the wrong position for a long time can cause discomfort.
  3. To Reduce Stress and Fatigue – Taking breaks while using the computer helps the body relax.
  4. To Improve Productivity – A comfortable user works faster and better.
  5. To Prevent Wrist and Finger Pain – Typing too much without breaks can cause pain in the hands.
  6. To Maintain Good Health – Regular exercise and proper posture help keep computer users healthy.
  7. To Enhance Cognitive function: Proper care, including adequate rest and breaks, helps maintain optimal brain function, improving focus and memory.
  8. To Promote Emotional Well-being: Taking care of humanware involves creating a comfortable and stress-free habitat, which promotes positive emotional health.
  9. To Ensure Longevity and Sustainability: By preventing health issues and promoting well-being, we ensure that computer users can continue to work efficiently and comfortably for a longer period.

Lesson Keywords

  • Humanware – People who use and operate computers.
  • Eye Strain – Discomfort in the eyes from prolonged screen use.
  • Posture – The way one holds their body while sitting or standing.
  • Productivity – The rate at which work is completed.
  • Fatigue – Extreme tiredness resulting from mental or physical exertion or illness.
  • Ergonomics – The study of people’s efficiency in their working environment.

Lesson Evaluation

To evaluate the learning, the teacher asks pupils to:

  1. What is humanware?
  2. Mention two reasons why we should take care of humanware.
  3. Describe a correct sitting posture while using a computer.
  4. Explain one health issue that can occur due to poor posture.
  5. Why is it critically important to take breaks while using a computer?
