Lesson Content/Board Summary

Modern Trend in Retailing

Branding

Branding is the process of giving a product a unique name, design, symbol, or packaging so that buyers can identify it easily and distinguish it from other products.

The following are advantages of branding:

  • Easy identification of products by customers.
  • Helps to build customer loyalty and repeat purchase.
  • Helps producers and retailers to promote products easily.
  • Improves product image and can increase sales.
  • Reduces confusion between similar goods.

The following are disadvantages of branding:

  • High cost of packaging, advertising, and promotion.
  • Branded goods may be more expensive for customers.
  • Imitation and fake products can damage the brand image.
  • Some customers may buy based on name rather than quality.

Self-service

Self-service is a retail method where customers select goods by themselves from shelves or displays and pay at a checkout counter.

The following are advantages of self-service:

  • Saves time for customers who can pick items quickly.
  • Allows customers to compare products and prices easily.
  • Reduces the need for many sales attendants.
  • Encourages impulse buying, which can increase sales.

The following are disadvantages of self-service:

  • High risk of shoplifting and pilferage.
  • Customers may damage goods while handling them.
  • Not suitable for very expensive or delicate goods without supervision.
  • Some customers may need assistance and may feel confused.

After-sales Services

After-sales services are services provided to customers after they have purchased goods to ensure satisfaction and continued patronage.

The following are examples of after-sales services:

  • Warranty and guarantee support.
  • Free installation of products.
  • Repairs and maintenance.
  • Customer support and complaint handling.
  • Spare parts supply.

The following are advantages of after-sales services:

  • Builds customer trust and confidence in the seller.
  • Encourages repeat purchase and customer loyalty.
  • Reduces product returns and customer complaints.
  • Improves the reputation of the business.

The following are disadvantages of after-sales services:

  • Increases business costs due to staffing and service tools.
  • Time-consuming to handle repairs, complaints, and follow-up.
  • May lead to losses if services are abused by customers.
  • Requires skilled personnel and good service organization.

Documents Used in Home Trade

Home trade documents are written records used in buying and selling of goods within a country to show transactions and support payment, delivery, and accounting.

The following are documents used in home trade:

  • Receipt: Evidence that payment has been made.
  • Invoice: Document sent to request payment and show goods supplied and prices.
  • Delivery Note: Document showing goods delivered and quantities supplied.
  • Purchase Order: Document sent by a buyer to request specific goods and quantities.
  • Credit Note: Document issued to reduce the amount owed by a buyer due to returned goods or overcharge.
  • Debit Note: Document issued to increase the amount owed by a buyer due to undercharge or extra costs.
  • Statement of Account: Summary of transactions between buyer and seller over a period.
  • Catalogue/Price List: Shows goods available for sale and their prices.
