  • Charts showing types of middlemen and their roles
  • Examples from local markets (case situations prepared by the teacher)
  • Distribution channel diagrams
  • Whiteboard/marker board and markers

Rationale for the Lesson

This lesson helps pupils understand why middlemen exist and how they support the movement of goods from producers to consumers. It also helps pupils judge when middlemen add value and when they may increase costs in everyday buying and selling.

Prerequisite/Previous Knowledge

Pupils have basic knowledge of wholesale trade and channels of distribution from previous lessons and can identify producers, wholesalers, retailers, and consumers.

Lesson Content/Board Summary

Middlemen

Meaning of Middlemen

Middlemen are individuals or businesses that stand between producers and consumers to help move goods and services through the distribution process. They include wholesalers and agents who help in buying, selling, storage, and delivery.

Reasons for Elimination of Middlemen

The following are reasons why middlemen may be eliminated:

  • To reduce the final price of goods by removing extra profit margins.
  • To allow producers to have direct contact with consumers and understand their needs.
  • To improve control over product quality, pricing, and product presentation.
  • To reduce delays in distribution and ensure faster delivery.
  • Growth of direct selling methods such as online sales and company outlets.
  • Availability of large retailers that can buy directly from producers.

Reasons for Survival of Middlemen

The following are reasons why middlemen continue to survive:

  • Producers may not have the capital to distribute goods widely.
  • Middlemen provide storage and warehousing facilities.
  • They break bulk and supply retailers in small quantities.
  • They provide market information and help in promoting goods.
  • They may grant credit to retailers and help to finance distribution.
  • They bear part of the risks of distribution such as spoilage and price changes.
  • They bring goods closer to consumers and reduce transport problems for producers.

Types of Wholesalers

The following are types of wholesalers:

  • Merchant wholesalers.
  • Agent wholesalers (agent middlemen).

Merchant Wholesaler: Meaning and Functions

A merchant wholesaler is a wholesaler who buys goods, takes ownership of the goods, and sells them to retailers for profit.

The following are functions of merchant wholesalers:

  • Buying goods in bulk from manufacturers or producers.
  • Storing goods in warehouses until needed.
  • Breaking bulk and supplying retailers in smaller quantities.
  • Providing transportation or arranging delivery in some cases.
  • Financing distribution by paying producers and granting credit to retailers.
  • Providing market information on demand, prices, and consumer preferences.
  • Assisting in promotion through display and advice to retailers.

Types of Merchant Wholesalers

The following are types of merchant wholesalers:

  • General goods wholesalers.
  • Specialized wholesalers (deal in a particular line of goods).
  • Cash-and-carry wholesalers.
  • Truck jobbers (deliver goods directly to retailers using vans/trucks).
  • Rack jobbers (maintain shelves/racks for retailers and restock goods).

Agent Middlemen: Meaning and Types

Agent middlemen are intermediaries who do not take ownership of goods but help to buy and sell goods on behalf of others for commission.

The following are types of agent middlemen:

  • Brokers.
  • Manufacturers’ agents.
  • Auctioneers.
  • Commission agents.
  • Delcredere agents.

Broker

A broker is an agent who brings buyers and sellers together to negotiate a sale and earns commission for the service. A broker does not usually take possession or ownership of the goods.

Manufacturers’ Agent

A manufacturers’ agent is an agent appointed by producers to sell their goods in a particular area. The agent receives commission and may represent more than one manufacturer.

Auctioneer

An auctioneer is an agent who sells goods to the highest bidder on behalf of the owner. The auctioneer earns commission from the sale.

Commission Agent

A commission agent is an agent who sells goods on behalf of the owner for a commission and may sometimes have possession of the goods for the purpose of selling.

Delcredere Agent

A delcredere agent is a commission agent who guarantees that buyers will pay for goods sold on credit. If the buyer fails to pay, the agent bears the loss and receives extra commission for taking the risk.
