Bisection of a Line Segment

Bisection of a line segment is the process of dividing a line into two exactly equal parts. The point that divides the line into two equal halves is called the midpoint.

The following are the steps to bisect a line segment AB:

  • Draw the line segment AB.
  • With A as centre and a radius greater than half of AB, draw arcs above and below the line.
  • With B as centre and the same radius, draw arcs to intersect the first arcs at points C and D.
  • Join points C and D with a straight line. This line CD bisects AB at its midpoint M.

Division of a Line into Equal Parts

Dividing a line into equal parts means splitting a given line segment into a specified number of smaller segments, all of which have the same length.

The following are the steps to divide a line segment AB into, for example, five equal parts:

  • Draw the line segment AB.
  • From point A, draw a line AC at any convenient acute angle to AB.
  • Using a compass, mark off five equal divisions (A1, A2, A3, A4, A5) along line AC.
  • Join the last point A5 to point B.
  • From each of the other division points (A1, A2, A3, A4) on AC, draw lines parallel to A5B to intersect the line AB. These parallel lines will divide AB into five equal parts.

Drawing a Parallel Line Using a Pair of Compasses

Parallel lines are lines that are always the same distance apart and never meet, no matter how far they are extended.

The following are the steps to draw a line parallel to a given line AB through a point P not on AB:

  • Draw the given line AB and mark point P outside the line.
  • Choose any point C on line AB.
  • Join P to C.
  • With C as centre and any convenient radius, draw an arc to cut AB at D and PC at E.
  • With P as centre and the same radius, draw an arc FG above P.
  • Measure the distance DE with the compass.
  • With F as centre and the distance DE, draw an arc to cut the arc FG at H.
  • Draw a straight line through P and H. This line will be parallel to AB.
