Lesson Content/Board Summary

First Aid

Meaning of First Aid

First aid is the immediate assistance given to an injured or sick person using available resources until professional medical treatment can be obtained. It is temporary care provided at the scene of an accident or sudden illness.

Objectives of First Aid

The main objectives of first aid are:

  • To Preserve Life: To stop the casualty from dying.
  • To Prevent Worsening: To prevent the condition from deteriorating.
  • To Promote Recovery: To aid in the recovery process of the casualty.
  • To Relieve Pain: To make the casualty as comfortable as possible.

Principles of First Aid

Effective first aid follows certain principles, often remembered by the acronym DRABC:

  • D – Danger: Assess the situation for any danger to yourself, the casualty, or others. Ensure safety before approaching.
  • R – Response: Check if the casualty is conscious and responsive by gently shaking them and asking questions.
  • A – Airway: Check if the casualty’s airway is clear. If not, open the airway by tilting the head back and lifting the chin.
  • B – Breathing: Check if the casualty is breathing normally. Look, listen, and feel for breath.
  • C – Circulation: Check for severe bleeding and manage it. If the casualty is unresponsive and not breathing, begin Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

Qualities of a Good First Aider

A good first aider should possess the following qualities:

  • Observant: Able to notice details of the injury or illness.
  • Resourceful: Able to make the best use of available materials and resources.
  • Tactful: Able to handle the situation with sensitivity and discretion.
  • Calm and Confident: Able to remain composed and instill confidence in the casualty.
  • Gentle: Able to handle the casualty with care to avoid further injury.
  • Hygienic: Able to maintain cleanliness to prevent infection.
  • Sympathetic: Able to show understanding and compassion.
  • Knowledgeable: Possesses proper training and understanding of first aid techniques.
