Lesson Content/Board Summary

Meaning of Gymnastics Practical and Floor Activities

Definition of Gymnastics Practical

Gymnastics practical refers to the guided practice of gymnastic movements and skills, emphasizing correct technique, progressions, and safety measures. It involves hands-on execution of various exercises to develop strength, flexibility, balance, and coordination.

Safety Precautions in Gymnastics

The following are important safety precautions for gymnastics activities:

  • Always warm up thoroughly before starting any activity.
  • Ensure the practice area is clear of obstructions and well-padded with mats.
  • Always have proper supervision from a qualified instructor.
  • Use spotting techniques for difficult movements to prevent falls.
  • Wear appropriate and comfortable clothing that allows for free movement.
  • Check equipment (e.g., mats) for damage before use.
  • Start with simple movements and gradually progress to more complex ones.
  • Listen to and follow all instructions from the teacher.

Floor Activities without Apparatus

Forward Roll

The forward roll is a basic gymnastic movement where the body rolls forward in a tucked position.

  • Starting Position: Stand with feet together, arms raised.
  • Execution: Squat down, place hands on the mat, tuck chin to chest, push off with feet, and roll over the back of the neck and shoulders. Finish in a squat or standing position.
Backward Roll

The backward roll is a gymnastic movement where the body rolls backward in a tucked position.

  • Starting Position: Squat with back to the mat, arms raised.
  • Execution: Sit back, tuck chin to chest, place hands by ears with palms up, push off with hands, and roll over the back and shoulders. Finish in a squat or standing position.
Cartwheel

The cartwheel is a sideways rotational movement where the body passes through an inverted position, supported by the hands.

  • Starting Position: Stand with one foot forward, arms raised to the side.
  • Execution: Step forward, place hands one after the other on the mat, kick legs over the body in a wheel-like motion, landing one foot at a time. Finish standing upright facing the opposite direction.

Teaching Methods/Instructional Techniques

Discussion, Lecture, Demonstration, Question and Answer, Visual Aids, Practical Demonstration and Practice

Instructional Procedures

Step 1: Introduction

Time: 3 minutes
Teaching Skill: Set Induction
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher greets the pupils, reminds them of the importance of physical activity, and introduces the topic of gymnastics practical and the floor activities to be covered.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils respond to greetings and listen attentively to the introduction.
Learning Point: Pupils are prepared for the lesson and understand the focus of the day’s practical session.

Step 2: Meaning of Gymnastics Practical

Time: 4 minutes
Teaching Skill: Explanation/Discussion
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher explains what gymnastics practical entails, emphasizing guided practice, correct technique, and the necessity of safety during execution.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils listen, ask questions for clarification, and contribute to the discussion.
Learning Point: Pupils understand the concept and purpose of gymnastics practical.

Step 3: Safety Precautions

Time: 4 minutes

Lesson Keywords

  • Gymnastics – A sport involving exercises that require strength, flexibility, balance, and agility.
  • Practical – Involving actual doing or use of something rather than theories and ideas.
  • Forward roll – A basic gymnastic movement where a person rolls forward in a tucked position.
  • Backward roll – A gymnastic movement where a person rolls backward in a tucked position.
  • Cartwheel – A sideways rotational movement where the body passes through an inverted position supported by the hands.
  • Safety – Measures taken to ensure protection from harm or injury.
  • Technique – A way of carrying out a particular task, especially the execution or performance of an artistic work or a scientific procedure.

Differentiation

For pupils who are struggling, the teacher will provide more one-on-one guidance, break down skills into even smaller steps, and use more visual aids. Advanced pupils will be challenged to refine their techniques, perform the movements with greater fluidity, or explore variations of the basic movements under strict supervision.

Note for teachers using this lesson plan

Ensure a thorough warm-up and cool-down are conducted before and after the practical session. Prioritize safety by ensuring adequate matting, clear space, and constant supervision. Encourage pupils to work at their own pace and provide positive feedback to build confidence.
