Lesson Content/Board Summary
Agents of Socialization
Family as an Agent of Socialization
The family is the first and most important agent of socialization. It is where a child learns basic habits, language, customs, values, and acceptable behaviour. Parents and relatives guide children to understand right and wrong.
The following are the roles of the family in socialization:
- The family teaches the child respect and obedience.
- It provides love, care, and protection.

- It helps the child to know family traditions and customs.
- It provides the foundation for education and social interaction.
School as an Agent of Socialization
The school is the second important agent of socialization. It is where children learn formal education, rules, cooperation, and responsibility. Teachers and fellow pupils influence the child’s attitudes and behaviour.
The following are the roles of the school in socialization:
- It provides knowledge and skills for learning and development.
- It teaches obedience to rules and respect for authority.
- It helps pupils to learn teamwork, sharing, and cooperation.
- It shapes attitudes through discipline and correction.
- It encourages leadership, participation, and social interaction.
Religious Organizations as Agents of Socialization
Religious organizations such as churches and mosques also help in socializing children. They teach moral and spiritual values that guide behaviour and decision-making.
The following are the roles of religious organizations in socialization:
- They teach love, honesty, and kindness.
- They encourage prayer and obedience to God’s laws.
- They promote peace, unity, and forgiveness among people.
