Lesson Content/Board Summary

Introducing Nouns And Pronouns

What is a Noun?

A noun is a word that names a person, place, animal, or thing.

Examples of nouns:

  1. Person: boy, girl, teacher, father, Mary
  2. Place: school, market, home, Lagos, park
  3. Animal: dog, cat, lion, bird, fish
  4. Thing: book, table, ball, car, pencil

What is a Pronoun?

A pronoun is a word that takes the place of a noun in a sentence. It helps us avoid repeating the same noun many times.

Examples of personal pronouns:

  1. I (used for yourself)
  2. You (used for the person you are talking to)
  3. He (used for a boy or man)
  4. She (used for a girl or woman)
  5. It (used for an animal or a thing)
  6. We (used for yourself and others)
  7. They (used for many people, animals, or things)

Using Nouns and Pronouns in Sentences

We use nouns to name things, and pronouns to replace those names to make sentences flow better.

Examples:

  1. Noun: Mary is playing.
  2. Pronoun: She is playing. (She replaces Mary)
  1. Noun: The dog is barking.
  2. Pronoun: It is barking. (It replaces the dog)
  1. Noun: John and I are friends.
  2. Pronoun: We are friends. (We replaces John and I)
  1. Noun: The children are happy.
  2. Pronoun: They are happy. (They replaces the children)

Teaching Methods/Instructional Techniques

Discussion, Explanation, Question and Answer, Guided Practice, Demonstration, Pair Work

Instructional Procedures

Step 1: Introduction

Time: 5 minutes

Teaching Skill: Activating Prior Knowledge

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher greets the pupils and asks them to name some things they see in the classroom (e.g., table, chair, book, boy, girl). The teacher explains that these are all names.

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils greet the teacher and name objects in the classroom.

Learning Point: Naming everyday objects

Step 2: Introducing Nouns

Time: 8 minutes

Teaching Skill: Explanation/Demonstration

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher explains that words that name people, places, animals, or things are called nouns. Using picture cards, the teacher shows examples of nouns (e.g., a picture of a boy, a school, a cat, a ball) and writes the names on the board.

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils listen, observe the cards, and repeat the names of the nouns.

Learning Point: Definition and examples of nouns

Step 3: Introducing Pronouns

Time: 8 minutes

Teaching Skill: Explanation/Modelling

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher explains that sometimes we don’t want to keep saying the same name, so we use other words called pronouns. The teacher introduces simple personal pronouns like “I,” “he,” “she,” “it,” “we,” “they” with examples (e.g., “Mary is happy. She is happy.”).

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils listen and repeat the pronouns and example sentences.

Learning Point: Definition and examples of pronouns

Step 4: Matching Pronouns to Nouns

Time: 8 minutes

Teaching Skill: Guided Practice

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher writes simple sentences with nouns and asks pupils to suggest the correct pronoun to replace the noun. For example, “The boy is running. ____ is running.” (He). “The cat is sleeping. ____ is sleeping.” (It).

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils identify the nouns and suggest appropriate pronouns to replace them orally.

Learning Point: Replacing nouns with pronouns

Step 5: Using Nouns and Pronouns in Sentences

Time: 5 minutes

Teaching Skill: Application

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher gives simple examples of using both nouns and pronouns in connected sentences (e.g., “My name is Bola. I like to read.”). The teacher then asks pupils to form their own short sentences using a given noun or pronoun.

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils form short oral sentences using nouns and pronouns.

Learning Point: Constructing sentences with nouns/pronouns

Step 6: Reinforcement and Review

Time: 2 minutes

Teaching Skill: Summarization

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher quickly reviews what nouns and pronouns are and their use in sentences, encouraging pupils to ask questions.

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils listen and ask questions for clarification.

Learning Point: Recap of nouns and pronouns

Step 7: Evaluation/Review

Time: 5 minutes

Teaching Skill: Questioning/Assessment

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher evaluates the learning by asking the following questions:

  1. What is a noun? Give two examples.
  2. What is a pronoun?
  3. Which pronoun can replace “my mother”?
  4. Make a simple sentence using the pronoun “we”.

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils answer orally and in writing.

Learning Point: Understanding nouns and pronouns

Step 8: Note-Taking

Time: 4 minutes

Teaching Skill: Guided Writing

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher guides pupils to copy the essential Board Summary notes on nouns and pronouns into their notebooks.

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils copy the notes carefully into their notebooks.

Learning Point: Recording lesson notes

Step 9: Conclusion

Time: 2 minutes

Teaching Skill: Consolidation

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher praises the pupils for their participation and reminds them to practice using nouns and pronouns correctly in their daily conversations. The teacher ends the lesson.

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils respond and prepare for the next lesson.

Learning Point: Lesson consolidation

Continuous Assessment/Further Study

Type: Homework

Differentiation

For weaker learners: Provide pre-written sentences with blanks for them to fill in simple nouns or pronouns. Use more picture cards and repetition. Pair them with stronger learners for support.

Teacher Guide for Using This Lesson Plan

Before the lesson, ensure you have a variety of clear picture cards representing people, places, animals, and things, as well as word cards for common nouns and pronouns. Begin by engaging pupils with familiar examples to introduce nouns, then transition smoothly to pronouns as substitutes for nouns. Emphasize the connection between nouns and the pronouns that replace them through clear examples and guided practice. Encourage oral participation before moving to written activities. Guide pupils to copy the Board Summary notes after the main teaching points have been clarified to ensure they record accurate information. Pay attention to common errors like mixing up “he” and “she” or using “it” for people, and provide immediate, gentle correction. Encourage collaborative learning during activities to foster peer support.
