Note for teachers using this lesson plan
Dear teacher, for this lesson, ensure you have a variety of common classroom objects and picture cards ready to help pupils identify and describe them. The central concept is for pupils to use appropriate English words to describe the names, colours, shapes, and sizes of familiar objects. By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to clearly describe objects using at least two attributes.

- Letter, word and picture cards
- Exercise books and pencils
- Simple objects in the classroom (e.g., a book, a bag, a pencil, a table, a chair, a ball)
- Flashcards showing different colours, shapes, and sizes
Rationale for the Lesson
This lesson helps pupils develop their vocabulary and observational skills by identifying and describing everyday objects. It lays a fundamental groundwork for effective communication and understanding of their environment. Mastering these descriptive words is essential for reading comprehension and expressing ideas clearly.
Prerequisite/Previous Knowledge
Pupils should be able to recognise some letters of the alphabet and have a basic understanding of spoken English words.

Instructional Procedures
Step 1: Introduction
Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Activating Prior Knowledge
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher greets the pupils and asks them to name a few objects they see in the classroom. The teacher then tells them that today they will learn to describe these objects using more words.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils respond to greetings and name some objects they see.
Learning Point: Prior knowledge activation
Step 2: Introduction of Object Names
Time: 7 minutes
Teaching Skill: Naming/Identification
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher shows various common objects (e.g., book, pencil, bag) one by one and clearly states their names. Pupils repeat the names after the teacher.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils observe the objects and repeat their names clearly.
Learning Point: Names of objects
Step 3: Introduction of Colours
Time: 7 minutes
Teaching Skill: Visual Recognition/Vocabulary Building
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher shows colour flashcards and objects of different colours (e.g., a red book, a blue bag). The teacher names each colour and asks pupils to identify objects of that colour in the classroom.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils identify colours and point to objects with those colours.
Learning Point: Common colours
Step 4: Introduction of Shapes
Time: 7 minutes
Teaching Skill: Visual Recognition/Concept Formation
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher shows shape flashcards (circle, square, triangle, rectangle) and points to objects in the classroom that have these shapes (e.g., clock for circle, window for square). The teacher explains each shape simply.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils observe the shapes and identify corresponding objects.
Learning Point: Basic shapes
Step 5: Introduction of Sizes
Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Comparative Description
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher shows two objects of different sizes (e.g., a big book and a small book) and introduces the words “big” and “small.” The teacher asks pupils to compare other objects using these words.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils compare objects and use “big” and “small” to describe them.
Learning Point: Words for size
Step 6: Combining Attributes to Describe Objects
Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Guided Description/Application
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher picks an object (e.g., a red, small, round ball) and describes it using its name, colour, and shape/size. The teacher then asks pupils to describe other objects using two or more attributes.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils practice describing objects in the classroom using multiple words.
Learning Point: Describing objects
Step 7: Evaluation/Review
Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Questioning/Assessment
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher evaluates the learning by asking the following questions:
- What is the name of this object? (Teacher shows a pencil)
- What colour is the classroom door?
- What shape is the clock on the wall?
- Describe your school bag using two words.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils answer orally and in writing.
Learning Point: Object description ability
Step 8: Note-Taking
Time: 4 minutes
Teaching Skill: Guided Writing
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher guides pupils to copy the essential Board Summary notes on names, colours, shapes, and sizes of objects into their notebooks.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils copy the notes carefully into their notebooks.
Learning Point: Notes on objects
Step 9: Conclusion
Time: 2 minutes
Teaching Skill: Reinforcement
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher summarises the lesson by reminding pupils that they can now describe many objects around them using names, colours, shapes, and sizes. The teacher encourages them to practice describing things at home.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils listen and acknowledge the summary.
Learning Point: Object identification skills
Continuous Assessment/Further Study
Type: Homework / Practice Exercise
Instruction: Look around your home and describe five different objects. Write their names and two words to describe each one (e.g., colour, size, or shape).
- My bed is ________ and ________.
- The television is ________ and ________.
- My plate is ________ and ________.
- The spoon is ________ and ________.
- My toy car is ________ and ________.
Lesson Keywords
- Object – a thing that can be seen and touched
- Name – what something is called
- Colour – the look of something, like red or blue
- Shape – the outline or form of something, like circle or square
- Size – how big or small something is

Differentiation
Support for weaker learners: Provide picture cards with labels for names, colours, shapes, and sizes. Allow them to point and use single words first before combining. Use more repetition and simple “What is this?” “What colour?” questions.
Extension for faster learners: Encourage them to describe objects using three or more attributes. Ask them to create simple sentences about objects or draw an object and label its colour and shape.

Teacher Guide for Using This Lesson Plan
Before the lesson, gather a variety of common classroom objects and prepare flashcards for colours, shapes, and size words. Introduce each attribute (name, colour, shape, size) separately with clear examples and repetition. Encourage active participation by asking pupils to identify and describe objects they see. During Step 6, guide pupils to combine attributes gradually. For example, start with “This is a book. It is red.” then progress to “This is a big, red book.” Ensure all pupils have a chance to speak. The Board Summary should be copied by pupils in Step 8, serving as their study notes. Check for understanding throughout the lesson, especially during the evaluation, and provide immediate feedback.
