Meaning of Plants
Plants are living things that grow in the ground. They have roots, stems, leaves, flowers, and sometimes fruits or seeds.
Examples of Plants
There are many diffrent types of plants that grow in Nigeria. the following are some examples:
- mango tree
- Maize
- Pawpaw tree
- Hibiscus flower
- Orange tree
- Yam plant
- Coconut tree
- Okra plant
- Plantain tree
- Cassava plant
Parts of a Plant
Plants have different parts that perform specific functions. These include:

- Root: Holds the plant in the ground and absorbs water and nutrients.
- stem: supports the plant and transports water, nutrients, and food.
- Leaf: Helps the plant make food from sunlight (photosynthesis).
- Flower: Produces seeds and helps the plant reproduce.
- Fruit: Contains seeds and protects them until they are ready to grow.
- Seed: Grows into a new plant when planted in the soil.
Uses of Plants
Plants are very vital to humans and the environment. Plants are used for many things such as:
- Food: Many plants provide fruits, vegetables, and grains for us to eat.
- Oxygen: Plants produce oxygen, which we need to breathe.
- Shelter: Trees provide wood for building homes and furniture.
- Medicine: Some plants are used to make medicines to treat illnesses.
- Clothing: Plants like cotton are used to make fabric for clothes.
- Decoration: Plants and flowers are used to beautify homes and gardens.
- Fuel: Wood from trees can be used as fuel for cooking and heating.
- Paper: Trees are used to produce paper for writing and printing.
- Shade: Trees provide shade from the sun, helping to keep us cool.
- Soil Conservation: Plant roots help to hold the soil together, preventing erosion.
