The Nigerian Constitution and National Unity

The Nigerian Constitution is the supreme law of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It serves as a framework for governance and outlines the rights and duties of citizens. Several parts of the Constitution are designed to promote national consciousness and unity among Nigerians.

Key Constitutional Provisions Promoting National Unity

The following parts of the Nigerian Constitution help to promote national consciousness and national unity:

  • The Preamble: The introductory part of the Constitution states the resolve of the Nigerian people to live in unity, peace, and harmony. It emphasizes the goal of promoting good government and welfare for all citizens on the principles of freedom, equality, and justice.
  • Chapter II – Fundamental Objectives and Directive Principles of State Policy: This chapter outlines the fundamental obligations of the government to promote the welfare of the people. It includes provisions for national integration, social justice, and economic prosperity for all. For example, Section 15(1) states, “The Federal Republic of Nigeria shall be a State based on the principles of democracy and social justice.” Section 15(2) encourages national integration and prohibits discrimination.
  • Chapter III – Citizenship: This chapter defines who is a Nigerian citizen, whether by birth, registration, or naturalization. It provides a common identity for all people living in Nigeria, regardless of their ethnic background, fostering a sense of shared nationality.
  • Chapter IV – Fundamental Human Rights: This chapter guarantees basic rights and freedoms to all Nigerians, such as the right to life, dignity of human person, personal liberty, fair hearing, freedom of thought, conscience and religion, freedom of expression and the press, peaceful assembly and association, and freedom from discrimination. These rights ensure equality and protect individuals, preventing divisions based on unfair treatment.
