Lesson Content/Board Summary
Ways of Promoting National Unity
Tolerance
Tolerance is the ability or willingness to accept the existence of opinions or behaviour that one dislikes or disagrees with. It means showing respect for the views and practices of others, even if they are different from our own.
Tolerance promotes national unity by:
- Reducing conflicts and misunderstandings among diverse groups.
- Encouraging peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.
- Allowing people to live together despite their differences.
Hospitality
Hospitality is the friendly and generous reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or strangers. It involves being welcoming and kind to people, irrespective of their background or origin.
Hospitality promotes national unity by:
- Creating a sense of belonging and acceptance for everyone.
- Breaking down barriers between different ethnic and religious groups.
- Fostering goodwill and friendship across the nation.
Non-discrimination
Non-discrimination means treating all people fairly and equally, without showing prejudice or favouritism based on their ethnicity, religion, gender, or any other characteristic. It ensures that everyone has equal opportunities and is treated with dignity.
Non-discrimination promotes national unity by:
- Ensuring justice and equality for all citizens.
- Preventing feelings of marginalization or unfair treatment.
- Building trust and confidence among different segments of society.
Inter-ethnic Marriages
Inter-ethnic marriages are unions between individuals from different ethnic groups. These marriages create strong bonds between families and communities that previously might have been separate.
Inter-ethnic marriages promote national unity by:
- Blending cultures and traditions, leading to greater understanding.
- Creating new family ties that cut across ethnic lines.
- Serving as examples of unity and harmony in society.
