National Anthem and Pledge as Unifying Symbols

Nigeria’s current anthem is Nigeria, We Hail Thee, restored by the National Anthem Act 2024. Its three stanzas emphasise unity among different peoples, respect for the flag, truth, justice, honour, peace and a nation in which no person is oppressed. Arise, O Compatriots is the former anthem and must not be described as current.

The National Pledge expresses loyalty, faithful service, defence of unity and honour, and a promise to build a better country. Recitation has civic value only when citizens practise the values in daily decisions.

Institutions and Measures Intended to Support Unity

• NYSC: encourages eligible graduates to serve and interact outside familiar communities.
• Unity Schools: bring learners from different states and backgrounds together.

Critical Citizenship

Unifying Measures in the National Anthem and Pledge

The National Anthem and Pledge contain words and phrases designed to foster unity, loyalty, and patriotism among Nigerians.

• National Anthem: Calls for “one nation bound in freedom, peace and unity,” urging citizens to serve with “heart and might” and build a “nation where peace and justice shall reign.”

Purposes of Establishment of National Institutions

National Youth Service Corps (NYSC)

The NYSC scheme was established in 1973 to involve Nigerian graduates in nation-building and development. Its primary purposes are:
